Focus on getting enough fiber from a variety of foods and on bowel movements that are comfortable for you—not on maximizing fiber or going more often. A daily bowel movement is not a universal health requirement, and suddenly adding a lot of fiber can cause discomfort. The social-media terms “fibermaxxing” and “poopmaxxing” are not medical goals.
What do “fibermaxxing” and “poopmaxxing” mean?
“Fibermaxxing” means deliberately pushing fiber intake higher, often in pursuit of health benefits. “Poopmaxxing” focuses on optimizing or discussing bowel movements. Healthline describes the linked trend in its May 19, 2026, report. Neither phrase is a clinical diagnosis or an established medical target.
The useful questions are more ordinary: Are you getting fiber from foods you tolerate? Are bowel movements reasonably easy and comfortable for you? And has your usual pattern changed in a way that persists?

Not necessarily. In a September 23, 2026, Scientific American interview, board-certified gastroenterologist Wendi LeBrett describes a normal frequency range that can span three times a day to three times a week. That is her stated clinical range in the interview, not a universal diagnostic rule. Comfort, ease, and your usual pattern matter more than trying to increase the count.

More frequent bowel movements do not automatically mean better health. LeBrett cautions against the belief that pooping more often is inherently healthier, and notes that people vary. There is no need to track every bowel movement or chase a supposedly perfect schedule if you feel well and your pattern is stable.
Why does fiber matter—and why isn’t more always better?
Fiber supports bowel function, and gut microbes use some types of it. Fibers do not all act alike: insoluble fiber can add bulk, while soluble fiber holds water and is more readily used by gut microbes. Individual responses vary, so a type or amount that suits one person may not suit another.

Stanford’s June 2026 coverage describes a 2022 study led by Stanford professor Michael Snyder that compared fiber types, including inulin and arabinoxylan, which is found in psyllium husk and some whole grains. The report notes differing effects and individual variation; those findings do not establish that everyone should take a supplement or keep increasing intake.
A large, sudden increase in fiber can cause gas, bloating, diarrhea, or other discomfort as the gut adjusts. Some gas can occur when microbes ferment fiber; that does not mean you have failed or need to eliminate fiber altogether.

How can you increase fiber without overdoing it?
- Start with foods. Add a fiber-containing food you enjoy, such as oats or another whole grain, fruit, vegetables, or legumes. Stanford experts recommend making whole foods the foundation.
- Make one manageable change at a time. Rather than overhaul your diet or add several products at once, try one food and see how you feel. Stanford nutrition expert Marily Oppezzo recommends small, manageable changes.
- Give your body time to adjust. If you notice gas or bloating, avoid escalating quickly. Different sources may feel different, so you can try another whole-food option if one is hard to tolerate.
- Consider supplements only as a qualified option. Stanford’s report discusses psyllium, but does not establish that supplements are necessary or universally beneficial. If you are considering a fiber supplement, especially with ongoing symptoms or a medical condition, ask a clinician what is appropriate for you.
As Stanford gastroenterologist Sean Spencer puts it: “We haven’t mastered the art of fiber supplementation for gut health yet. Until we do, the best thing we have is whole foods.”

Do not treat concerning symptoms as part of a trend or dismiss blood in stool as “probably hemorrhoids” based only on its appearance. In the Scientific American interview, LeBrett identifies blood, persistent difficult bowel movements, pain or discomfort that affects daily life, and a significant ongoing change from your usual bowel habits as reasons to seek medical advice.
