Adding an eCash option may help an online store serve customers who want to pay with cryptocurrency, but there is no independent evidence here that adding eCash itself causes sales growth. The term is also ambiguous: the official e.cash site describes a public network using XEC and lists PayButton among its tools; a separate Syria-focused gateway uses the ecash-pay.com name, and its claims have not been independently verified. These are not established as the same system. This article focuses on the checkout decision, not on treating every product called “eCash” as interchangeable.
What does “eCash” mean at checkout?
Before evaluating a payment option, identify exactly what the customer sends and what the merchant receives. “eCash” can refer to different products and protocols. The official e.cash site describes the XEC public network and lists tools including PayButton. That does not establish that a separate gateway using the ecash-pay.com name supports XEC, or that the two services are connected.
For any provider, establish whether checkout accepts XEC, another cryptocurrency, or a locally issued electronic-money balance. These options can have different redemption, custody and settlement arrangements. A familiar product name alone is not enough to determine the asset or payment flow.

Why merchants are considering crypto checkout
A 2026 release from PayPal and the National Cryptocurrency Association points to merchant interest, but it measures reported adoption and beliefs—not sales growth caused by accepting crypto. The release reports an online Harris Poll survey conducted October 21–27, 2025, among 619 US payment-strategy decision makers. The reported sampling precision was ±3.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. Results should not be treated as a census of merchants or generalized to every market.

- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.

| Survey finding | What it indicates | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| 39% said their business already accepted cryptocurrency at checkout. | Crypto acceptance was reported by a portion of surveyed US decision makers. | That 39% of all US merchants—or merchants elsewhere—accept it. |
| 88% said they had received customer inquiries about paying with crypto; 69% said customers wanted to use it at least monthly. | Some surveyed businesses report customer questions and recurring interest. | The level of demand at your store or the number of inquiries that become purchases. |
| 79% agreed crypto acceptance could help attract new customers. | Many respondents believe it could support acquisition. | A measured increase in new customers or revenue. |
| 90% said they would be likely to accept crypto if setup were as simple as accepting credit cards; the release separately reports that 90% would try acceptance if the experience matched that ease. | Perceived ease of implementation matters to respondents. | That any particular provider or integration is as simple as card acceptance. |
| 84% believed crypto payments would become common within five years. | Respondents expressed an expectation about future adoption. | That the forecast will happen or that a specific eCash product will become common. |
PayPal Vice President and General Manager of Crypto May Zabaneh said that familiar payment experiences could make crypto “a powerful growth tool.” That is a vendor executive’s view, not independent evidence of a causal sales lift. No cited source establishes that adding eCash specifically increases merchant growth.
Will eCash attract more customers or increase sales?
It might, if your customers want the exact asset or payment service you offer and can use it comfortably. The survey figures support testing merchant interest, not assuming a conversion or acquisition benefit. The useful question is not whether crypto is popular in the abstract, but whether a defined group of your customers will choose this exact checkout option—and whether those completed orders are profitable after costs and support.

Payment habits also vary by market. In the ECB’s 2024 SPACE study, which surveyed 50,000 euro-area consumers using data collected in September–November 2023 and April–June 2024, cards remained the most popular payment method. Digital payment use was increasing more slowly, and most consumers considered having the option to pay with cash important. Separately, a July 2026 BIS Bulletin says retail payments have digitalised rapidly while incumbent banks and card networks retain dominant positions in key markets. Neither source establishes demand for XEC or a particular gateway. They do underscore why a new option should complement, not displace, familiar ways to pay.
What to check before choosing a checkout option
Compare the actual payment flow and operational fit rather than relying on a broad “crypto” or “eCash” label. Provider pricing and compatibility are not established by the evidence cited here, so confirm them directly with the provider.

- Asset and protocol: Record the exact asset or balance the customer pays with, and verify the network and provider support it.
- Customer demand: Look for evidence from your own markets, such as customer requests or checkout behavior; do not substitute a national survey for store-level demand.
- Integration effort: Confirm compatibility with your ecommerce platform, setup requirements, maintenance and the customer experience on desktop and mobile.
- Settlement: Determine what the merchant receives, when it arrives, how conversion or redemption works, and which party handles custody.
- Costs and volatility: Get the full fee schedule and clarify who bears price movement between payment and settlement. Do not assume lower fees.
- Refunds and disputes: Establish how refunds are initiated, what amount or asset is returned, how long the process takes, and what support or dispute route exists.
- Security and compliance: Understand key management, account controls, applicable compliance obligations and the provider’s responsibilities in each market.
How to test whether eCash fits your store
A bounded pilot can tell you more about your customers than a broad adoption statistic. Keep existing payment choices available during the test, and define the measurement period and success criteria before launch.
- Specify the option. Document the provider, exact asset or balance, supported countries, settlement currency and customer-facing checkout steps.
- Set up a limited rollout. Enable the option for a suitable subset of traffic or products, if your platform permits, without removing cards or other established methods.
- Track the full payment funnel. Measure how often customers see and select the option, how many complete checkout, and whether completed orders are from new or returning customers.
- Include operational outcomes. Record refunds, failed or delayed settlements, support contacts, integration maintenance and total costs—not just payment selections.
- Compare against a baseline. Evaluate the pilot against comparable traffic and your existing checkout results. A rise in selections alone is not evidence of incremental sales if customers would otherwise have paid another way.
- Decide from net results. Continue only if customer value and operational results justify the added complexity for your business.
What not to assume
Network-level claims do not guarantee the same outcome through a specific merchant integration. Do not promise lower fees, instant finality, global reach, privacy or fewer chargebacks as universal benefits. Confirm the provider’s actual process, terms and coverage for your configuration before making customer-facing claims.
