An analyst argues Xbox should have released Gears of War: E-Day on PlayStation 5, citing weak estimated Steam sales. That is a business opinion, not an official Microsoft assessment: Microsoft currently lists the game for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with no PS5 edition announced.
Why an analyst says Xbox should not have skipped PS5
Tech4Gamers reported on October 1, 2026, that Rhys Elliott, an analyst at Alinea Analytics, argued Xbox should have launched Gears of War: E-Day on PS5 as well as Xbox and PC. The argument is that a PlayStation release could expose the game to a wider audience beyond Xbox and PC players.

Elliott’s reported sales figures add context to that view, but they do not prove a PS5 version would have made the game more successful. The available report does not establish how much revenue a port would generate or whether its development and release costs would be justified. Tech4Gamers’ October 1 report attributes the figures to Elliott and Alinea Analytics.
What the reported Steam figures mean
According to Tech4Gamers’ account of Elliott’s analysis, Alinea Analytics estimated that Gears of War: E-Day had sold about 120,000 copies on Steam for nearly $7 million. Elliott also reportedly projected that Steam sales might not reach one million copies during 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
- The 120,000-copy figure and nearly $7 million in sales are analyst estimates, not official Microsoft figures or audited totals.
- The sub-one-million figure is a projection for Steam sales during 2026, not a confirmed final result.
- These figures concern Steam. They should not be treated as total sales across Xbox, other PC storefronts, or Game Pass subscriptions.
Steam estimates can inform a discussion about one storefront’s performance, but they cannot show the game’s full audience or establish how many people played through a subscription.
Is Gears of War: E-Day coming to PS5?
Microsoft’s current official product listing names Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Microsoft Store and Steam. It does not list PlayStation 5. The listing includes the game with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
That means the analyst’s recommendation should not be mistaken for a port announcement. No PS5 release or schedule is confirmed by the cited official platform information; a later port remains speculation.

When does the game release, and how can players access it?
Xbox lists October 6, 2026, as the release date. Premium Edition players can begin up to five days of early access on October 1, 2026; Xbox Wire reported early access availability on that date. The game is also listed for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch, so eligible subscribers have an access route that does not require buying a separate copy. Xbox Wire’s October 1 update covers the early-access launch.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.

Elliott’s recommendation raises a reasonable platform-reach question: releasing on PS5 could potentially put the game in front of players who do not use Xbox or PC. But the reported Steam estimates alone cannot answer whether skipping PS5 was a mistake. They do not establish overall sales, subscription engagement, port costs, or the revenue a PS5 edition might have generated.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
For now, the firm facts are narrower: Microsoft lists Xbox and PC, the analyst’s PS5 argument is opinion, and the cited sales numbers are estimates about Steam rather than official cross-platform totals.
