Neither USD nor your local currency is always the better choice. Invoice in the currency that best balances your client’s payment friction with your ability to receive, convert, and account for the money. Before agreeing, compare the full conversion and payment costs, decide who carries exchange-rate risk, and check the invoicing and tax rules that apply to both parties.

Three currencies can be involved in one payment

The currency on your invoice does not necessarily match the currency your client pays from or the currency you ultimately receive. Keep these three separate when comparing options:

  • Invoice or charge currency: the currency in which you quote the work and request payment.
  • Client payment-method currency: the currency of the client’s card, bank account, or other payment method. If it differs from the charge currency, the client’s bank or card issuer might charge a foreign-exchange fee, as Stripe explains in its supported currencies guidance.
  • Freelancer settlement and bookkeeping currency: the currency your bank or payment provider pays out in, and the currency your accounting or tax rules require you to use.

Stripe says it can convert a charge currency to a merchant’s settlement currency when they differ. Its fee guidance describes conversion based generally on a mid-market rate sourced from third-party providers, subject to applicable fees. Its terms also warn that local-currency payment arrangements may include an exchange-rate markup and that card networks may add foreign-transaction fees. These are examples of payment mechanics, not proof that a particular provider or invoice currency is cheapest for every developer. Check the current terms and available currencies for your account and country.

Compare USD and local currency against your situation

Use the same criteria for both options. “Local currency” here means the currency in which you normally operate; a client’s local currency may be different.

What to compare USD invoice Your local-currency invoice
Client familiarity and payment friction May be convenient if the client budgets and pays in USD. If its payment method is in another currency, its bank or issuer might charge for conversion. May make the amount owed clearer to you. A foreign client may need its bank or payment provider to convert into your currency.
Receiving and settlement Check whether your provider or bank can receive, hold, or settle USD in your country, and what charges apply. Check whether your provider can receive and settle in your currency, and whether the client’s payment method supports it.
Total conversion and payment cost Compare the exchange rate and all provider, bank, card-network, and intermediary charges; the client may also face a fee. Make the same comparison, including any conversion cost borne by the client and any receiving or settlement charges you pay.
Exchange-rate exposure If you convert USD later while your expenses and records are in another currency, the amount you keep in that currency can change. A foreign client may bear conversion cost or rate movement when paying an amount fixed in your currency.
Books and compliance Invoice currency does not by itself determine the currency or conversion method for your tax records. Confirm applicable accounting, tax, and invoice rules; these depend on jurisdiction and transaction.

The allocation of exchange-rate risk depends on the currencies, payment route, and timing. Stripe’s documentation explains that charge, payment-method, and settlement currencies can differ; it does not set a universal rule for who bears the resulting cost. Agree on the amount and conversion terms rather than assuming the invoice currency settles the question.

Choose based on the client, payment route, and your costs

  • USD may be practical when a client budgets and pays in USD and you can receive or convert it at acceptable total cost.
  • Your local currency may be practical when you want the amount owed to align with the currency in which you operate, and the client accepts the resulting payment and conversion arrangements.
  • Neither option is settled by the headline fee alone. Compare the exchange rate, processor charge, receiving-bank charge, and any intermediary or card-network fees. Payment availability and fees vary by provider, account, market, and country.

For a US client, ask what currency it actually pays from and whether its bank or card issuer charges for a different charge currency. For a client elsewhere, make the same inquiry instead of assuming that “USD” or your own currency is automatically easier or cheaper.

Put the currency and payment terms in writing

State the commercial terms in your contract or statement of work, then keep the invoice consistent with them. Address these points before work begins:

  1. Invoice currency and amount: identify the currency in which the fee is fixed and the amount the client owes.
  2. Due date and payment method: set when payment is due and which payment routes you accept; check whether the route supports the agreed currency.
  3. Conversion method, if needed: specify who converts the money and, where the amount depends on a rate, the rate source and date used. Alternatively, agree to a fixed amount in the invoice currency.
  4. Fees: say who is responsible for provider, bank, intermediary, or other payment charges, rather than leaving the net amount implicit.
  5. Late payment and refunds: clarify how the agreed currency and any conversion or fees are handled if payment is late or a payment is refunded.

Tax records and invoice rules depend on jurisdiction

Invoice currency and tax-reporting currency are separate questions. Check the rules for your own location and, where relevant, the client’s location; do not treat US or UK guidance as a global standard.

United States: federal income-tax translation

The IRS says foreign-currency amounts of income, expenses, and other tax-relevant items generally must be translated into the taxpayer’s functional currency. It says most taxpayers’ functional currency is USD. If USD is your functional currency, the IRS says to use the exchange rate prevailing when an item is received, paid, or accrued, choosing the rate that most properly reflects income if more than one rate exists. The IRS also says it has no official exchange rate and generally accepts a posted rate used consistently; when multiple rates exist, the applicable rate depends on the facts and circumstances. See IRS guidance on foreign currency and exchange rates and IRS guidance on foreign currency transactions.

United Kingdom: VAT invoice amounts

In the UK VAT context, HMRC says an invoice may show amounts in a foreign currency, but the sterling value for VAT purposes must be clear. That value is not simply a conversion of the foreign-currency amount; the applicable method depends on UK VAT rules and the transaction. See HMRC guidance on foreign currency transactions and VAT.
