For an agent gateway that only transports, logs, or routes tool calls, passing them through without unnecessary translation is usually the safer default. Each mapping layer is another place to omit a field or alter its meaning. Translation is still the right choice when you need to validate data, enforce policy, route by inspecting content, or connect incompatible interfaces.
“Byte-faithful” needs a precise boundary: preserving raw wire bytes is not the same as preserving parsed protocol fields, and neither is the same as preserving application values after an SDK has processed them. This is an architectural recommendation based on documented protocol and SDK behavior—not a published benchmark showing pass-through is always more reliable.
What pass-through preserves—and what it does not
In a pass-through design, an intermediary forwards a tool definition, call, or result without remapping its contents. That can reduce compatibility risk when the intermediary has no reason to interpret or change the payload. It does not, by itself, guarantee that every layer preserves identical bytes: an SDK may parse a message, validate it, or convert it before application code sees it.
Specify the boundary your system promises to preserve:

- Raw wire bytes: the encoded message as transmitted, before parsing.
- Parsed protocol objects: the fields and values after protocol decoding.
- Application-level values: what remains after an SDK has interpreted, validated, or converted the message.
These are distinct guarantees. The MCP TypeScript SDK documents protocol-era changes to structured output encoding, while its support guide explains that some wire-level bookkeeping fields are consumed by the protocol layer rather than passed to application code. See the TypeScript SDK migration guide and its protocol revision support guide.
How MCP tool calls move through an agent integration
MCP is an open protocol for connecting applications and language models to context and tools, as described in Anthropic’s MCP documentation. In OpenAI’s documented Agents API flow, an MCP server publishes tool definitions and handles calls; the API discovers those tools, invokes the server, and returns results to the agent. See OpenAI’s MCP connections documentation.

- NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES & PRIVATE LORAWAN NETWORK: Build a local LoRaWAN IoT network with the built-in SIoT server and pre-installed Node-RED. Collect data, create dashboards, and run automation flows locally without required cloud service fees. Suitable for DIY makers, home gardeners, educators, and small IoT prototype projects.
- LOCAL DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY CONTROL: Sensor data can be processed on the local network through the built‑in MQTT/SIoT server, reducing reliance on third‑party cloud platforms. Local automation rules continue running when internet access is unavailable — suitable for home, garden, greenhouse, and classroom IoT setups.
- 4KM COVERAGE & 8-CHANNEL RELIABILITY: Equipped with the SX1302 8-channel LoRaWAN chip, -140dBm sensitivity, 27dBm max transmit power, and included 5dBi antenna. Supports up to 4km coverage in open environments, helping connect garden sensors, greenhouse nodes, garages, mailboxes, and remote monitoring points.
- NODE-RED DRAG-AND-DROP VISUAL AUTOMATION:Automation rules, data dashboards, and control logic can be built with little to no coding using the pre‑installed Node‑RED. Flows such as reading soil moisture, checking temperature, and sending relay commands are created through a visual interface — reducing setup time for maker, education, and prototype projects.
- EASY SETUP WITH WIFI AP & MQTT INTEGRATION: Configure the gateway via Wi-Fi AP mode using a laptop or mobile device. Built-in MQTT broker supports integration with Node-RED dashboards, and other MQTT-compatible platforms. Designed for indoor residential, educational, and prototyping use; not intended for outdoor installation.
The protocol-facing tool interface is only one part of the architecture. The deployment path and approval policy remain separate decisions. OpenAI documents remote MCP connections and Secure MCP Tunnel for private or local servers, along with developer approval controls for calls. See MCP connections and MCP server safety and approvals.
Why translation can change a tool’s contract
A tool result may contain more than user-facing text. MCP SDK documentation describes model-facing content, machine-readable structuredContent, and application metadata in _meta. The Python SDK also describes validating structured results against a declared output schema. An adapter that forwards only text, drops metadata, coerces structured values, or turns an error into a success-shaped response can change the contract even if a person sees a plausible message. See the Python SDK server documentation and the TypeScript SDK tool-call documentation.

That does not mean every translation is lossy, or that pass-through is always more reliable. The narrower point is that an unnecessary mapping creates another transformation to maintain. When an intermediary does not need to change the call, removing that mapping avoids one class of compatibility risk.
When to pass through and when to translate
| Approach | Use it when | Design focus |
|---|---|---|
| Pass-through | The intermediary transports, logs, or routes calls without changing tool definitions, arguments, results, errors, or authorization decisions. | Preserve the original representation as far downstream as practical; make logging and tracing additive rather than rewriting payloads. |
| Translation | You need to bridge incompatible interfaces, validate arguments or structured output, enforce a policy boundary, or route based on fields the intermediary must inspect. | Map known fields explicitly, preserve unknown or extension fields where the target protocol permits, and define handling for errors, metadata, content blocks, and schema versions. |
These are engineering choices, not normative MCP requirements. OpenAI’s Agents SDK documentation also describes hosted MCP execution and schema-conversion behavior; account for any conversions in the SDK path you select. See the Agents SDK MCP guide.

How to evaluate an agent gateway
Compare candidate designs against the requirements of your integration rather than treating “pass-through” or “translation” as a blanket guarantee.
- Fidelity: Are tool names, arguments, content blocks, structured results, metadata, and error status retained?
- Version tolerance: What happens when a server or client adds a field or changes a wire encoding?
- Validation and safety: Where are schemas and approval policies enforced, and what rejects malformed or unauthorized calls?
- Operational placement: Does execution happen in a hosted service, a reachable remote server, or a private or local environment?
- Debuggability: Can logs and traces show calls without mutating the payloads they observe?
Testing a translation boundary
If translation is necessary, test it as a contract boundary, not merely as a successful round trip for the simplest text result.
Best Value
- Record which representation the adapter accepts and emits: raw bytes, parsed protocol objects, or application-level values.
- Use representative calls and results, including structured output, metadata, content blocks, and errors.
- Check that known fields map correctly and that unknown fields are retained or handled according to the target protocol.
- Test against each protocol and SDK version you support, including version-specific structured-output behavior.
- Verify that approval decisions and authorization checks remain enforced independently of payload forwarding.
- Inspect logs and traces to confirm observability does not rewrite the messages being forwarded.
SDK validation can help catch schema mismatches, but it does not by itself prove that an adapter preserved every field or semantic distinction. Keep the test focused on the contract your gateway claims to maintain.
What the evidence supports
Official documentation establishes that MCP standardizes a tool interface, that agent integrations can discover and invoke server-published tools, that results can include distinct content, structured data, and metadata, and that SDKs may validate or transform data across protocol revisions. It does not establish a quantified reliability, performance, or error-rate advantage for pass-through. Treat the preference for avoiding needless translation as an architectural inference, and verify current protocol and SDK behavior for the versions you deploy; those details can change.
