No. A Google Sheet is where you store data, not an HTTP endpoint that receives Shopify webhook requests. To get webhook data into Sheets, put an HTTPS receiver between Shopify and the spreadsheet. That receiver must accept Shopify’s POST request, validate it, respond quickly, and handle retries or duplicates before writing the data to a sheet.
Why Shopify cannot send a webhook directly to a Google Sheet
A Shopify webhook is an HTTP POST sent to a configured destination. Shopify expects that destination to be a reachable HTTPS endpoint capable of receiving the request and returning an HTTP response; a spreadsheet itself does not provide that webhook handler. Shopify describes its webhook delivery model in About webhooks, and its HTTPS setup requires an HTTPS URL in Create a webhook subscription.
The practical flow is Shopify → HTTPS receiver → validation and delivery handling → Google Sheets. The receiver can then extract relevant fields and append or update spreadsheet rows.
What the receiver has to do
- Accept HTTPS POST requests. Shopify sends webhook payloads in POST requests, with JSON content and delivery metadata. The payload and headers are described in Webhooks delivery structure.
- Validate the delivery before trusting its contents. Shopify’s HTTPS deliveries include an
X-Shopify-Hmac-Sha256header: a base64-encoded HMAC-SHA256 signature made with the app’s client secret and the raw request body. The receiver needs the raw body and the header to verify it, as explained in Verify webhook deliveries. - Return success quickly. Shopify documents a one-second connection timeout and a five-second overall request timeout. The endpoint should do only the work needed to validate and durably accept the delivery, then return a 200-range response. If writing to Sheets may take too long, record or queue the delivery first and handle the spreadsheet update asynchronously.
- Expect repeats and out-of-order events. Shopify may retry failed deliveries, so the same event can arrive more than once; delivery order is not guaranteed. Store delivery IDs and make row changes idempotent, and use event timestamps rather than assuming arrival order. See About webhooks and Verify webhook deliveries.
- Plan for failures and recovery. Shopify says failed deliveries can be retried up to eight times over four hours, and repeated failures can lead to removal of a webhook subscription. Monitor delivery errors and reconcile records so missed events do not silently leave the sheet incomplete. Details are in Verify webhook deliveries.
Can Google Apps Script sit between Shopify and Sheets?
Apps Script can form part of a lightweight integration. A web app can expose a doPost(e) handler; its documented event object includes the POST body as e.postData.contents and its content type as e.postData.type. The handler can parse fields and write them to a spreadsheet, subject to deployment identity, spreadsheet permissions, authorization, and Apps Script execution constraints. There is an important security limitation to resolve before using Apps Script as the only receiver: the reviewed Apps Script web-app event documentation describes the request body but does not document access to incoming request headers. That does not establish that a bare Apps Script endpoint can read Shopify’s HMAC header and verify the signature. Since Shopify requires signature validation for HTTPS deliveries, confirm that your actual platform setup can access the required header and raw body. If it cannot, put a header-capable receiver or middleware in front of Apps Script and Sheets.
Choose an integration based on delivery risk
The right intermediary depends on the importance and volume of the data, and on how much operational work you can maintain. Shopify documents HTTPS, Amazon EventBridge, and Google Cloud Pub/Sub delivery options for supported subscriptions; availability depends on the merchant and app setup. These are delivery routes, not a guarantee that a particular subscription can use each one.

These are decision criteria, not a vendor ranking. For production use or sensitive data, favor an arrangement that can verify Shopify’s signature and provide durable delivery handling before the data reaches the spreadsheet.
