A Shopify agency build can cost $5,000–$10,000 for a basic store, $15,000–$35,000 for a mid-tier custom build, and more than $50,000 for enterprise or Shopify Plus work, according to Shopify’s 2026 guide citing Storetasker’s 2025 developer rate guide. These are budget benchmarks, not guaranteed quotes or a market-wide survey. The actual price depends on what the agency will design, build, integrate, migrate, test, and support.
Shopify agency cost benchmarks
Shopify’s guide, updated August 13, 2026, reports these build ranges from Storetasker’s 2025 developer rate guide. Shopify notes that project prices vary with complexity.
| Project type | Reported budget | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Basic agency build | $5,000–$10,000 | Shopify, 2026, citing Storetasker’s 2025 developer rate guide; a benchmark, not a guaranteed quote. |
| Mid-tier custom build | $15,000–$35,000 | Shopify, 2026, citing Storetasker’s 2025 developer rate guide; a benchmark, not a guaranteed quote. |
| Enterprise or Shopify Plus work | More than $50,000 | Shopify, 2026, citing Storetasker’s 2025 developer rate guide; a benchmark, not a guaranteed quote. |
Redesign pricing is a separate set of estimates. ShopExperts’ 2026 guide gives $10,000–$75,000 for a full store redesign and $15,000–$100,000 or more for a conversion-focused redesign with research. These are ShopExperts’ stated ranges, not an independently verified market survey. They should not be averaged with Shopify’s build benchmarks: the service definitions and scope differ.

Shopify also reports that a Databox survey of more than 40 agencies found most clients paid less than $30,000 per year. Shopify describes the sample as narrow, so this is directional context rather than a rate for a one-time store build.

What determines the price
The same label—“Shopify design”—can describe very different work. A design-only engagement, theme customization, complete design-and-development build, store migration, and ongoing optimization are distinct scopes. Ask agencies to define the work behind their price before comparing proposals.
Scope and technical complexity
ShopExperts identifies service type, seniority, engagement model, scope complexity, store complexity, and geography as pricing dimensions. Custom code, third-party integrations, multiple regions, B2B requirements, and a headless storefront can add complexity. A migration may also involve work beyond visual design, depending on what must be moved and connected.

Agency team and location
Rates can vary with the seniority of the people doing the work and the agency’s geography. Ask who will actually be assigned to the account and what responsibilities each person has; a proposal’s agency-wide credentials do not establish which team will deliver your project.

What the quoted scope includes
Two proposals with similar totals may cover different deliverables. Check whether each includes design and implementation, integrations, quality assurance, launch support, training, maintenance, and handover. Record exclusions as carefully as inclusions so that apparently cheaper work does not leave essential tasks unpriced.

How agency billing models affect your budget
ShopExperts lists hourly, fixed-price, monthly-retainer, fractional, and performance-based models. Shopify likewise describes project fees for bounded builds and migrations, retainers for continuing marketing work, and performance pricing tied to outcomes. The model should fit the work, and the total commitment matters more than the headline rate.
| Billing model | Often suited to | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | Small, bounded tasks or troubleshooting when the work is uncertain. | Estimated hours, approval before exceeding the estimate, and how work is reported. |
| Fixed price | A project with defined deliverables and acceptance criteria. | What counts as complete, revision limits, exclusions, and how change requests are priced. |
| Monthly retainer | Continuing work rather than a single defined build. | Monthly deliverables, unused time or capacity, minimum term, and cancellation terms. |
| Fractional engagement | Ongoing access to expertise without a full-time hire. | Availability, responsibilities, response times, and whether implementation is included. |
| Performance-based | Work where payment is tied to agreed outcomes. | How outcomes are measured, which factors the agency controls, and how payment is calculated. |
How to compare Shopify agency proposals
Shopify recommends getting itemized quotes from at least two or three agencies. Ask each firm to price the same project brief, or make differences explicit, so you can see whether a price gap comes from the agency’s rate or from a different scope.

- Define the requested work. State whether you need design only, implementation, migration, custom functionality, or continuing optimization. List required integrations, regions, B2B needs, and any headless requirements.
- Request an itemized proposal. Ask for deliverables, exclusions, assumptions, payment milestones, acceptance criteria, and costs for changes outside scope.
- Check delivery and support. Confirm what is included for QA, launch, training, maintenance, and handover, and what happens to store assets and data if the engagement ends.
- Evaluate the people and relevant experience. Ask about work for businesses at a comparable revenue scale, relevant platform or tool specialization, and which team members will work on your account.
- Ask how success will be assessed. Request comparable before-and-after examples and a clear explanation of how results will be measured and reported.
- Compare total cost and commitment. Include recurring fees, the length of any retainer, and priced exclusions—not just the first project payment or hourly rate.
Finding agencies through Shopify’s directory
The Shopify Partner Directory lets businesses filter by service type, price range, location, industry, language, and Partner tier. Use those filters to build a shortlist, then assess each agency against the project brief and its actual proposal. A directory listing or tier alone does not prove that an agency is the right fit for a particular store.
