The Shokz OpenRun Air 2 is a lightweight, open-ear bone conduction headset built for exercise—not a noise-isolating pair of headphones. Shokz claims up to 10 hours of playback per charge and rates it IP67, but explicitly says not to use it for swimming or underwater activities. Its secure sports fit is a strength; sound leakage, vibration comfort, and a conflicting battery figure on a review page are worth weighing before you buy.

What kind of headphones are the OpenRun Air 2?

The OpenRun Air 2 uses bone conduction and leaves your ears open. Rather than sealing the ear canal, its transducers sit against the sides of the head and deliver sound through vibration. That design can suit people who want to hear some surrounding sound while exercising, but it does not provide the isolation of in-ear or over-ear headphones.

Shokz lists a weight of 26.4 g and says the Air 2 is more than 9% smaller than the original OpenRun. Both figures are manufacturer claims. The behind-the-head band does not fold, and RTINGS notes that the headset takes up space in a bag and does not include a carrying case. (Shokz product page; RTINGS review)

How does it perform for exercise?

Fit and stability

RTINGS describes the fit as stable and comfortable for sports, including intense activity. That is a favorable sign if you need headphones that stay in place while moving. Fit is still personal, and Shokz offers Standard and Mini sizes; check the sizing information and locally available variants before ordering.

  • ADVANCED BONE CONDUCTION AUDIO - Enjoy pressure-free open-ear listening that delivers connection with awareness of your surroundings. The rich, balanced sound of PremiumPitch 3.0 is also customizable with the Shokz App's 4 preset and 2 custom EQ profiles
  • IP67 WATER-RESISTANT RATING - OpenRun Air 2's durable design is IP67 water-resistant, so you can train, rain or shine, then rinse them off with water and keep going. That’s clean made easy. (Not for swimming or underwater activities)
  • 10 HOURS OF PLAYTIME - These Bluetooth V6.0 headphones power your workouts from start to finish with an improved, ten-hour battery life. The 5-minute quick charge capability adds up to 2 hours of calls, music, and podcast play when you need it most
  • CRYSTAL-CLEAR CALLS - The optimized dual noise-cancelling mic layout combines with AI-powered noise reduction for clear calls. Physical buttons let you manage your calls, adjust the volume, or switch between tracks with a simple press

Awareness, sound leakage, and vibration

The open-ear layout leaves the ear canals unobstructed, but it also means little sound isolation. RTINGS reports that the Air 2 leaks sound and offers almost no noise isolation, so nearby people may hear playback and environmental noise can compete with it. Bone conduction vibrations may also feel uncomfortable to some listeners. Try the style if possible before committing, especially if you are sensitive to vibration.

RTINGS says its test rig cannot collect sound-test results for bone conduction drivers. Its review therefore does not independently validate sound-quality claims through those lab measurements. The review reports SBC Bluetooth codec support and no wired connection; confirm technical details against current product documentation if those specifications are important to you.

Battery life: Shokz says 10 hours, while RTINGS lists 18

Shokz specifies up to 10 hours of battery life per charge and says a five-minute charge provides up to two hours of playback. These are manufacturer figures, not independently verified runtime results in the sources cited here. RTINGS’s review page lists 18 hours in several places, which conflicts with Shokz’s official specification. Treat the runtime as unresolved rather than assuming either number is a confirmed real-world result. (Shokz product page; RTINGS review)

Can you swim with the OpenRun Air 2?

No. Shokz lists an IP67 water-resistance rating, but that does not mean the headset is intended for swimming. The company states: “OpenRun Air 2 should not be worn while swimming or engaging in underwater activities.” Follow that specific restriction rather than treating the rating as permission to use it underwater. Is the Shokz OpenRun Air 2 worth it?

It is a plausible choice for workouts if you want an open-ear design and a secure fit matters more than isolation or compact storage. The main trade-offs are substantial: surrounding noise remains audible, playback can leak to people nearby, vibration may not suit you, and the headset does not fold or come with a case. Consider another headphone style if you need quiet listening, private playback, or a compact travel set.
