The Shokz OpenFit Air 2 is a strong fit if you want lightweight, earhook-style earbuds for exercise and everyday listening while keeping your ears unblocked. It has no active noise cancellation, and its open design gives up some isolation and bass compared with in-ear earbuds. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the fit secure during workouts and the buttons easier to use than the original model’s touch controls, but said sound could be drowned out on trains.
What are the Shokz OpenFit Air 2 good for?
They are open-ear Bluetooth earbuds designed for workouts and general listening. Each earbud hooks around the ear, with its speaker positioned near—but not inside or over—the ear canal. That leaves the ear unblocked, which can help you stay aware of nearby sounds while running or exercising outdoors. It does not make the earbuds a substitute for paying attention to traffic or other hazards.
Shokz lists each earbud at 7.2 g and specifies a flexible 0.75 mm Ni-Ti alloy earhook and a 30-degree angled speaker. Its DirectPitch technology is described by the company as reducing sound leakage; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that other people cannot hear your audio. Fit and volume can affect leakage.
How do they sound, and what do you give up without isolation?
The open design does not seal the ear, so it cannot provide the isolation of an in-ear design. Shokz confirms that the OpenFit Air 2 does not feature active noise cancellation (ANC). As a result, surrounding noise remains part of the listening experience, and the earbuds are less suited to noisy commutes or situations where you want to block out the world.
#1 Best Overall
- Even lighter. All-day comfort - Just 7.2g. That's it. OpenFit Air 2 is 17.2% lighter than the previous generation. Made with soft, skin-friendly materials, it feels gentle on the ears even during extended wear. The open-ear design minimizes ear canal pressure and heat buildup, delivering a light, breathable fit. From HIIT sessions to dog walks to back-to-back calls, they stay secure and comfortable, so you stay focused.
- Firm frame. Flexible fit - Built from 0.75mm Ni-Ti alloy, the frame holds firm and lasts. The ultra-narrow pod sits naturally over the ear, while the ergonomic ear-hook adapts to the shape of your ear — easing pressure points and keeping everything secure, even during intense workouts.
- Pocket-sized. Effortless style - 10.5% smaller, 17.6% lighter, and sleeker than the previous generation. Easy to carry, easy to style. The charging case slips into any pocket — jeans, blazer, bag — without adding bulk.
- Hear your world. And your music - Shokz's signature open-ear design helps you stay aware of your surroundings — whether you're camping, jogging, or hiking. Plus, DirectPitch Technology keeps your audio and calls private, while minimising sound leakage so those around you stay undisturbed.
- Bold, booming sound - Shokz's patented Bassphere driver packs powerful sound into a compact unit. The dual-driver system, with output equivalent to a custom 16 mm driver, delivers rich, impactful bass and a full, expansive soundstage. Choose from 4 preset EQs or build your own with 2 custom modes — tuned exactly how you like it.
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer, writing after three weeks of use, judged the sound good for the price but less clear and powerful than Shokz’s OpenFit 2+ and OpenFit Pro. The reviewer also noted the familiar open-ear trade-off of less bass and noise cancellation than in-ear earbuds. Audio remained audible by busy roads in that reviewer’s experience, but could be drowned out on trains; results will vary with surroundings and listening volume.
The audio system combines Shokz’s Bassphere and OpenBass 2.0 technologies. The Shokz app offers four preset EQ modes and two custom modes, which let you tailor the sound rather than changing the open-ear design’s underlying trade-offs.

Are they comfortable and secure for exercise?
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer described the earbuds as lightweight and secure during workouts, with a flexible fit. That is a hands-on reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that the hook will fit every ear. If possible, check the return policy before buying, particularly if you have found earhook designs uncomfortable in the past.

Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found them easier to operate than the original OpenFit Air’s touch controls, including with sweaty fingers or gloves. That may matter during exercise, when accurately tapping a small touch surface can be awkward.

Battery life, water resistance and connections
- Battery: Shokz rates the earbuds for up to 8 hours per charge and up to 36 hours with the charging case. It also rates a 10-minute quick charge for up to 3 hours of listening. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed results. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer reported that the 8-hour and 36-hour figures matched their use.
- Water and dust resistance: Shokz’s US listing rates the earbuds IP55 and the case IP54. These are separate component ratings; neither means the earbuds or case are suitable for immersion.
- Bluetooth and multipoint: Shokz lists Bluetooth 6.1 and multipoint pairing for two devices. Its instructions say to enable MultiPoint Pairing in the Shokz app and connect the second device there. Multipoint pairing should not be taken to mean that audio from both devices mixes simultaneously.
- Calls: The earbuds have dual microphones with AI noise reduction for calls, according to Shokz.
OpenFit Air 2 vs. the original OpenFit Air
Shokz’s product comparison lists longer battery claims, a higher water-resistance rating for the earbuds and updated controls for the Air 2. The following US prices are the amounts displayed on Shokz’s product pages when accessed on October 7, 2026; retail prices can change.
| Feature | OpenFit Air 2 | Original OpenFit Air |
|---|---|---|
| Battery claim | Up to 8 hours per charge; up to 36 hours with case | Up to 6 hours per charge; up to 28 hours with case |
| 10-minute quick-charge claim | Up to 3 hours of listening | Up to 2 hours of listening |
| Earbud resistance rating | IP55 | IP54 |

| Controls | Pressure-sensitive buttons | Touch controls |

| Displayed US price | $129.95 | $119.95 |
The Air 2’s listed price was $10 higher than the original Air’s at the time the pages were accessed. The extra battery capacity and different controls are the clearest stated distinctions; the newer Bluetooth version alone does not establish a particular real-world performance advantage.
