Don’t immediately send another label-create request. A timeout means you do not know whether the provider created the label—not that it failed. Check the provider’s documented shipment or label lookup first, then retrieve or reprint an existing label, or create a new one only when the provider’s recovery instructions say no label exists. Separately check the account’s billing record: a label record and a payment authorization, capture, refund, or settlement are not necessarily the same thing.

The label API timed out after charging me—should I retry?

Not until you have checked whether the first request created a label. A request can reach the provider and complete even if the response is lost on its way back. Replaying the create call may therefore buy a second label.

Use the provider’s documented lookup, retry, or status operation for that specific endpoint. Do not assume an idempotency header or request UUID makes creation safe to replay: that behavior depends on the provider and endpoint. Also, seeing a charge or pending transaction does not by itself tell you whether the label exists or whether the payment has settled.

How do I know whether the shipping label was created?

  1. Preserve the original attempt. Record the request payload, request or transaction identifier, idempotency token if used, timestamp, and timeout or connection-reset details. Do not alter shipment details and reuse a key unless the provider explicitly permits it.
  2. Check the provider’s documented recovery path. Use its shipment/label lookup, retry, or get-label operation. For Pitney Bowes Shipping APIs, if the initial Create Shipment request received no response, use Retry Shipment to check whether a label exists. Its documented retrieval window is up to 24 hours after the initial request. Pitney Bowes Retry Shipment documentation.
  3. If a label exists, retrieve it. Use the provider’s get-label or reprint route rather than creating another shipment. Pitney Bowes describes Reprint Shipment as retrieving label or QR-code data when the original response was lost or spoiled; USPS documents a Get Label operation and reprint behavior tied to its request UUID. USPS Domestic Labels 3.0 API documentation Pitney Bowes Reprint Shipment documentation.
  4. If the provider confirms no label exists, follow its create-again instructions. Pitney Bowes says to create a new shipment with a new Transaction ID in this situation. That is a Pitney Bowes-specific instruction, not a universal rule; use the corresponding provider’s guidance for other APIs.
  5. Reconcile the financial record separately. Check the relevant carrier or payment account for the transaction’s current status and any cancellation or refund option. Record the final label/shipment ID and financial outcome. If either remains unclear, contact the provider with the request identifier and timestamp instead of repeatedly submitting create requests.

Will retrying buy a second label?

It can. The key question is whether the exact create endpoint documents idempotent behavior and what its key means. A familiar header, UUID, or generic HTTP retry setting is not enough to establish that replaying a request is safe.

API and scope Documented behavior What it means after a timeout
USPS Domestic Labels 3.0, United States The label endpoint is explicitly “Not idempotent.” The client-generated X-Idempotency-Key UUID is used for reprint and cancellation operations; resubmitting a used UUID may create another label, and those operations reference its most recent instance. USPS API documentation Do not replay creation on the assumption that the UUID prevents a duplicate. Check for the label and use the intended retrieval or cancellation route.
Pitney Bowes Shipping APIs Retry Shipment checks whether a label exists after a Create Shipment call received no response. If none exists, the documented instruction is to create a new shipment with a new Transaction ID. Retrieval is available up to 24 hours after the initial request. Retry Shipment documentation Use the retry lookup first; distinguish it from reprint and new creation.
DHL eCommerce Americas Label API, U.S. region The documentation lists create, get, and void operations and says each request creates a single label. The surfaced documentation does not establish create idempotency or a recovery protocol for an ambiguous timeout. DHL eCommerce Americas Label API documentation Do not infer safe replay from the operation list. Consult current endpoint guidance or support before creating again.

These are provider-specific examples, not a complete survey of shipping APIs. For another provider, verify the create endpoint’s idempotency contract, identifier scope, lookup route, retention window, reprint and void paths, and how label status relates to billing.

Can I reprint the label without paying again?

Often the right next action is retrieval or reprint, not a second purchase, if the provider confirms an existing label. Reprint/get-label operations retrieve the result of an existing shipment; they are distinct from create. USPS documents getting a label and ties reprint behavior to its UUID, while Pitney Bowes provides Reprint Shipment for lost or spoiled label/QR response data. Use the specific operation and eligibility rules in your provider’s documentation; do not treat a printer problem or lost response as proof you need another label.

Does an idempotency key protect the payment?

Only within the API and contract that define it. Stripe says its own API’s idempotency keys support safe retries after connection errors and return the first result, including a 500 response. Stripe may prune keys after at least 24 hours, and reusing a key with different parameters produces an error. These rules apply to Stripe API calls; they do not establish that a separate carrier label endpoint is idempotent or that a particular payment was captured or settled. Stripe idempotent requests documentation.

Keep the shipment record and financial record separate in your investigation. Verify the label with the carrier or shipping platform, and verify the transaction state in the relevant billing account. Do not assume a displayed charge means a completed settlement, or that a label cancellation automatically means a refund has completed.

What should I change in an integration to prevent duplicate labels?

  • Persist each operation before dispatch. Store its identifier, inputs, creation time, and eventual provider response so a worker can resume reconciliation after a timeout.
  • Branch retries on endpoint semantics. A network timeout or reset after sending a mutating request is an ambiguous outcome. Prefer status lookup or the provider’s documented retry operation over blind replay.
  • Keep identifiers and parameters consistent where required. If a provider documents idempotency, follow its key scope and parameter rules. Stripe, for example, errors when a key is reused with different parameters; do not transfer that behavior to unrelated endpoints.
  • Separate operation types. Create, retry lookup, get/reprint, void/cancel, and refund are different actions. Confirm label state and billing state independently.
  • Disable unqualified automatic create retries. Generic HTTP clients, queues, and proxies should not automatically replay label creation unless that endpoint has a documented idempotency contract or the workflow reconciles the first attempt before resubmitting.
  • Respect rate limits after resolving the outcome. Stripe’s error reference recommends exponential backoff for HTTP 429 responses. Follow the applicable provider’s rate-limit instructions; backoff does not establish whether a timed-out request already completed. Stripe error codes documentation.

When should I contact the provider?

Contact the carrier or label platform if its lookup cannot establish whether a label exists, the documented recovery window has passed, or the label and billing records conflict. Provide the original request or transaction identifier, timestamp, and relevant shipment details. Until the provider confirms the outcome, avoid repeated create submissions.
