Build AI listing tools to produce drafts that sellers can inspect, correct, and approve—not finished listings that move straight to publication. Sellers remain responsible for published claims, while marketplace requirements cover more than prose: item specifics, condition, identifiers, catalog matches, images, and platform-specific disclosures may all matter.
Why listing AI needs a review step
Generative AI can make a listing sound polished while adding a benefit or product fact the seller never supplied. Shopify warns that generated product descriptions may include unsupported benefits or details drawn from similar products, and directs merchants to read, edit, and save the result. That makes fluent writing a poor substitute for checking each claim against product evidence. Shopify Magic documentation
Responsibility also stays with the seller. eBay says sellers assume responsibility for listing accuracy and content, including material created with generative AI tools. Shopify likewise says merchants are responsible for the accuracy of published AI-generated content. An AI feature is therefore best treated as a drafting aid, not as an authority that can validate a product. eBay User Agreement

Start with verified product facts
Use seller-provided, verified product attributes as the source of truth: for example, material, dimensions, color, model, condition, and variant details where relevant. Keep the source facts visible beside generated text. A claim that cannot be traced to the product record should be presented as something for the seller to verify, not silently added as a fact.

Generate into separate listing fields
Keep title, description, condition, category, identifiers, variants, and other relevant fields distinct. This lets a seller review each part in the context where it will appear and makes it easier to catch a mismatch, such as a title implying a new item while the condition field says used. eBay requires accurate condition and required item specifics, and says catalog details must match the item exactly. A good paragraph cannot repair an incorrect structured field. eBay item description policy
Make conflicts and unsupported claims easy to spot
Design the review view to prioritize differences between the product record and generated content, along with claims that have no supporting source. This is a product-design response to seller obligations and documented generation risks; it should not be presented as a feature already offered by a marketplace unless that has been established.

Preserve editing, preview, and explicit approval
Allow field-level edits and show a preview of the complete listing before publication. Require an explicit seller approval action rather than publishing generated content automatically. Shopify instructs merchants to read and edit generated descriptions before saving. Amazon also says it encourages sellers to review generated listing details before submission: “We always encourage sellers to review our generated product details before they submit them to our store.” Amazon listing-tool announcement

Keep marketplace rules specific to each marketplace
A review system should make the source and scope of each policy check visible. Do not turn a rule for one marketplace into a universal rule or assume that satisfying a text check means the listing complies in every other respect.

eBay: accuracy across listing fields
eBay’s item-description policy calls for accurate descriptions, consistency about item condition across title, description, and item specifics, complete and accurate required specifics, and catalog details that match the item exactly. It also requires listing descriptions, pictures, and video to use the primary language of the eBay site. The User Agreement puts responsibility for listing accuracy and content on the seller, including content created with third-party tools: “You assume full responsibility for the item offered and the accuracy and content of the listing, including listing content created using tools offered by eBay or third parties such as translation, image editing, and generative artificial intelligence tools;” eBay says policy violations may result in content removal, warnings, restricted activity, or account suspension. Etsy: category-specific AI disclosure and imagery requirements
Etsy permits seller-prompted AI creations in its seller-designed category when they are based on the seller’s original prompts, and requires the seller to disclose in the listing description that the item was created using AI. Separately, listings for items made by a seller must use original photos or video of the final product. These are Etsy rules tied to its categories and listings, not a universal disclosure standard for all marketplaces. Etsy Creativity Standards

Shopify: inspect generated descriptions before saving
Shopify Magic generates product-description suggestions from details supplied by the seller. Shopify warns that the output may contain unsupported benefits or facts from similar products, and advises merchants to read closely, edit for accuracy and brand fit, and save the revised text. Shopify also notes in its AI best-practices material that the same request may not always produce the same result, which is another reason to review each generated draft rather than rely on a prior result. What adoption figures do—and do not—show
Amazon reported in 2024 that more than 100,000 selling partners had used one or more of its generative AI listing tools and that sellers accepted suggested attributes nearly 80% of the time with minimal edits. These are Amazon-reported adoption and acceptance figures, not an independent test of attribute accuracy or evidence that generated listings performed better. Amazon also reported improvements across its own measures of clarity, accuracy, and detail when comparing AI-generated and non-AI-generated content, but the announcement does not provide the evaluation method or numerical results needed to assess that claim independently. Evaluate the workflow beyond drafting speed
Measure whether the tool saves time, but also watch for customer and listing outcomes. Shopify identifies conversion rate, cart abandonment, return rate, support inquiries, and organic search rankings as possible measures for product descriptions. Those measures can help a team monitor its own changes; they do not establish that a review-first editor caused an improvement. Shopify product-description writing guidance
For a design or procurement review, assess whether the workflow:
Quick Recap
- Links claims to supporting product facts or clearly marks claims needing seller verification.
- Supports field-level review and catches contradictions across title, description, condition, specifics, and variants.
- Applies marketplace-specific checks while showing each rule’s source and scope.
- Keeps the seller in control through edits, a full-listing preview, and approval before publication.
- Handles relevant identifiers, variants, and media as well as descriptive text.
- Can be evaluated against workflow and customer measures without assuming causality from a before-and-after change.
