Shield AI has selected Des Moines, Washington, as the planned production home for its X-BAT aircraft, with production targeted to begin in 2029. The company expects about 4,000 workers in the Seattle region by the early 2030s, while a separate company-commissioned model estimates about 8,000 regional jobs supported by the program. Those figures describe different scopes, and neither is a count of jobs already created.
Where Shield AI plans to build X-BAT
In its September 30, 2026 announcement, Shield AI named X-Forge 3 in Des Moines, just south of Seattle, as X-BAT’s production home. The company says production is planned to start in 2029 and reach full rate in the early 2030s. These are company schedules, not completed milestones. Shield AI’s site announcement
The company assigned different roles to its other X-Forge locations: X-Forge 2 at Newton City-County Airport in Kansas is designated for development and acceptance flight testing, customer acceptance flights, and fleet maintenance, repair and overhaul. What the 4,000 and 8,000 job figures mean
GeekWire reported Shield AI’s expectation of about 4,000 workers in the Seattle region by the early 2030s. Separately, Shield AI estimates that X-BAT will support about 8,000 jobs in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue region by that period. The company says its broader supported-jobs figure includes Shield AI employees, supplier employment, and jobs sustained by local spending. The sources do not resolve precisely how the 4,000-worker figure is counted, so the two numbers should not be treated as equivalent or added together. GeekWire Shield AI

Shield AI’s release also projects about 27,000 supported jobs in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue region by 2046 and roughly $73 billion in regional economic impact through that year. The company says its estimates use an IMPLAN model based on 2024 data, with projections from 2026 through 2046. They are modeled forecasts conditional on the program proceeding as planned; the sources do not provide independent validation of the employment or economic-impact model. What X-BAT is—and what is established so far
Shield AI introduced X-BAT in October 2025 as an AI-piloted vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft for expeditionary and maritime missions in contested environments. The company describes it as designed to operate from ships, remote islands, and austere forward bases, with its Hivemind autonomy software intended for denied, degraded, or disconnected conditions. What the announcement does—and does not—confirm
Shield AI senior vice president of aircraft Armor Harris told GeekWire that customer interest could support production rates “greater than fighter jets have been built in a really long time.” That is a reported expression of interest and potential, not evidence of signed orders or a confirmed production rate. The practical takeaway is that Des Moines is the announced production site, while Newton is slated for testing and sustainment. The employment figures remain projections attached to a planned aircraft program, not a record of hiring already completed.
