Shelby Street reopened shortly before Oct. 1, 2026, after Indianapolis completed a $14 million Fountain Square drainage project. Some nearby businesses say months of construction disruption reduced customer access and sales, while one cafe reported more walk-ins after reopening. Those are individual business accounts, not evidence of a neighborhood-wide sales decline.

Indianapolis Department of Public Works completed the drainage project, and Shelby Street reopened during the week before Oct. 1, BusinessIndy reported on Oct. 1, 2026. The Indianapolis Business Journal had reported on Aug. 28 that parts of Shelby Street had been closed since January as work proceeded on the $14 million Fountain Square Area Drainage Improvements Project.
The confirmed reopening in the available reporting is Shelby Street. It does not establish that every nearby road, ramp, or bridge connection is open. Check a current city or INDOT closure notice before choosing a route; the reports cited here do not provide a reliable, current detour map.

What was the drainage project designed to do?
The work included a storm sewer intended to reduce the amount of stormwater entering Indianapolis’s combined sewer system during high-water events, along with landscaped rain garden medians along Shelby Street, BusinessIndy reported. That describes the project’s intended function; the available report does not provide measurements showing that flooding or sewer overflows have decreased since completion.

The story also reported that the storefront closed and mentioned nearby restaurant closures, including Magdalena and Parkside Public House.
