Madhurima, a former bank employee interviewed by Hindustan Times in October 2026, says she paid ₹2 lakh to leave her job and accepted a startup role at half her reported bank salary. She described long days, denied leave, difficulty taking breaks, verbal abuse and serious emotional distress. Her account shows what leaving cost her—not what it costs everyone facing a harmful workplace.
What happened in Madhurima’s case?
Hindustan Times identifies the interviewee only as Madhurima; she did not wish to disclose her surname. The outlet reports that she prepared for the IBPS exam for two years after completing a master’s degree, then joined a government-owned bank in October 2022. She was posted to a rural branch in Karnataka and underwent mandatory training. She said her in-hand salary was ₹70,000 a month, with house-rent allowance.
Her description of the working conditions is her account in the interview, not an independently established finding. She said her days could exceed 12 hours, she sometimes worked Sundays, and she faced additional targets and work while having limited leave. At the cash counter, she said, it was difficult to take breaks. She reported developing a severe urinary tract infection that lasted two to three months. Hindustan Times’ report does not include a response from the bank or independent corroboration.

Madhurima told the outlet, “I was crying every day after work.” She also described exhaustion, calling her parents less often, and verbal abuse by a senior. She said she reported the senior to HR and that his behavior changed after HR contacted him. She told Hindustan Times she had suicidal thoughts at the time; this is her reported experience, not a clinical diagnosis.

She places her breaking point in February 2024, when a request for leave to attend a friend’s wedding was refused shortly before the planned absence. She said she resigned the following month while on probation and served one month’s notice.
What did leaving cost her financially?
According to Hindustan Times, Madhurima said she paid ₹2 lakh in bond penalties to leave the bank. The report does not reproduce the bond agreement or explain how the amount was calculated, so it cannot establish what the contract required or whether the payment would apply to another employee.

She said she moved from ₹70,000 a month in reported in-hand bank pay to a Bengaluru-based startup job paying ₹35,000 a month—a 50% reduction in monthly salary. During her notice period, she contacted recruiters on LinkedIn and sent cold emails, according to the report.

By the report’s publication in October 2026, she said her salary had risen to ₹60,000 a month in a remote role as a Senior Customer Support Executive. Hindustan Times also reported that she lived with her husband in Hyderabad and described greater flexibility and improved mental health. These pay and later-status details are interview-reported, not independently verified.

Her account makes the trade-off concrete: she left a role with substantially higher reported pay, paid a significant amount to exit, and took a lower-paying job that she later described as more flexible. The later salary she reported was higher than her startup starting pay but remained below her earlier in-hand bank salary. For her, the decision involved more than the immediate paycheck: she also described the effect of the schedule and workplace on her health, relationships and wellbeing.
It is one person’s experience, not evidence that all bank jobs are toxic, that every employment bond requires a ₹2 lakh payment, or that changing jobs will improve someone else’s circumstances. The report does not include the bank’s account, the written bond terms, or independent verification of the allegations. Those limits matter when drawing conclusions about the employer or using her figures as a guide to another worker’s situation.
