Sharp announced the Polish LCD TV module plant in 2006 to support Europe’s growing LCD television market. The facility, Sharp Manufacturing Poland (SMPL), began making LCD modules in January 2007 and assembling complete televisions in July. Sharp later agreed to transfer the operation to Universal Media Corporation (UMC) in 2014; the available records do not confirm the site’s operating status in 2026.
Why Sharp built a plant in Poland
Sharp said the investment would help it respond to the growing European LCD TV market and establish an integrated production operation in Europe. Its plan divided the manufacturing chain geographically: LCD panel front-end production would continue in Japan, while the Polish site would handle module back-end work and final television assembly. Sharp described the investment in its Fiscal 2006 business-strategy statement: “To cope with the growing LCD TV market in Europe, Sharp is constructing a new LCD module plant in Poland, which is scheduled to begin operations in January 2007.” That was Sharp’s stated rationale and schedule, not an independent market forecast.
Where the factory was and what it made
The facility was Sharp Manufacturing Poland (SMPL), near Toruń in north-central Poland’s Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. It was designed to make LCD modules and then use them in complete televisions. Module production and finished-TV assembly were separate stages, with different start dates and capacity measures.

When production began
- January 2007: LCD module production began, as later confirmed in Sharp’s corporate profile.
- July 2007: The plant began the integrated process from LCD module to finished television, according to Sharp’s opening report.
- August 28, 2007: Sharp held the facility’s official opening ceremony.
The January production start fulfilled the schedule Sharp had announced in 2006. The ceremony followed the start of both module production and television assembly.

What Sharp said about capacity
In its January 2007 investor presentation, Sharp listed capacity of 100,000 LCD modules per month at the start and set a target of 300,000 modules per month by the end of 2007. These were Sharp Corporation’s capacity statements, not independently measured output. They refer to LCD modules—not finished televisions—and the target does not establish that the higher capacity was reached.
Sharp’s 2014 transfer agreement
On December 19, 2014, Sharp announced that it had agreed to transfer SMPL to UMC as part of a restructuring of its European audiovisual business. Sharp said the business would withdraw from production and sales in favor of a brand-licensing arrangement. The announcement establishes the transaction plan at that time; it does not, by itself, verify the factory’s ownership, output or operating status in 2026.

How to read the original demand forecast
Sharp’s 2007 opening report repeated a forecast that European LCD TV demand would reach 36 million units by fiscal 2011, or 30% of the world market. Those figures were a forecast made at the time, not a confirmed account of the market’s eventual size. They help explain the company’s expectations behind the investment but should not be treated as actual results.

What the record establishes—and what it does not
- Established: Sharp’s 2006 rationale and intended division of production; SMPL’s location near Toruń; the January 2007 start of module production; the July 2007 start of finished-TV assembly; the August opening ceremony; Sharp’s stated module-capacity plan; and the December 2014 agreement to transfer the subsidiary to UMC.
