Sharp’s 8M-B120C is a 120-inch-class 8K display that can accept an 8K signal at 60 Hz or a 4K signal at 120 Hz—not 8K at 120 Hz. NVIDIA marketed the GeForce RTX 3090 as capable of 8K HDR gaming, but that launch claim does not guarantee a particular frame rate in any game. The pairing is technically plausible for large-screen 8K gaming, but the Sharp is a professional installation display, not a conventional gaming monitor.

What the Sharp 8M-B120C actually supports

Sharp’s 8M-B120C has a 120V-inch (304.8 cm) diagonal and a native resolution of 7,680 × 4,320 pixels. Sharp introduced it in 2020 as a professional display for uses such as signage, design review, digital exhibitions and public viewing.

Input timing Sharp-stated support
7,680 × 4,320 (8K) 60 Hz over a single HDMI 2.1 cable
3,840 × 2,160 (4K) 120 Hz over a single HDMI 2.1 cable

Sharp’s Japan announcement also describes a legacy four-cable method for 8K input. Its UK announcement says the display can reach refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but that general maximum does not mean 8K at 120 Hz. The specific single-cable timings Sharp publishes are 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz. Sharp’s 2020 announcement and Sharp UK’s 2021 announcement provide the market-specific details.

What an RTX 3090 brings to the pairing

When NVIDIA announced the RTX 3090 in September 2020, it described the card as enabling users to “connect, play, capture, and watch in 8K HDR.” That is NVIDIA’s launch positioning, not an independent test of the 8M-B120C or a promise that every game will run smoothly at 8K. The actual experience depends on the game, graphics settings and desired frame rate.

NVIDIA also said at launch that the RTX 3090 averaged about 10–15% faster than the RTX 3080 in 4K gaming and was up to 50% faster than TITAN RTX. Those are company comparisons from 2020, not current independent benchmarks or evidence of a specific 8K frame rate. NVIDIA’s RTX 30 Series announcement gives its original claims.

Why this is not an ordinary gaming-monitor purchase

The 8M-B120C’s scale and operating requirements make it a professional AV installation product. Sharp Japan rated it for 16 hours of continuous operation and listed power consumption at 1,000 W on 100–120 VAC or 1,520 W on 200–240 VAC. Sharp Electronics Corporation’s US brochure lists an approximate display-only weight of 412.3 lb, increasing to 454.2 lb with the floor stand, and specifies M8 mounting points. Those figures call for checking the current local documentation and installation conditions rather than treating it like a television that can simply be placed on typical furniture.

Who should consider the combination?

The combination may suit a professional venue or a specialist installation where a very large 8K image is the priority, the display’s 8K/60 Hz input timing is acceptable, and the site can accommodate the equipment. It is a less straightforward fit for someone seeking a high-refresh-rate gaming screen: the 120 Hz timing Sharp specifies is at 4K, not 8K, and the product was announced for professional applications rather than as a home gaming display.

  • Look elsewhere if your essential requirement is 8K at 120 Hz, or if you want a conventional home gaming monitor.
  • Evaluate the GPU by game if 8K gaming performance is central: NVIDIA’s general launch claim does not establish frame rates for your titles or settings.
