The Shark PowerDetect Corded Upright AZ3900 is a corded upright with sensor-based cleaning adjustments and a powered Lift-Away design—not a cordless stick vacuum. Shark’s Australian listing gives the AZ3900 a 9 m cord, 1.3 L dust cup and 7.068 kg product weight. An independent hands-on review of the related UK AZ3900UKT found its automatic floor adjustments and Lift-Away useful, but also noted that the upright feels heavy to carry and its cord needs managing. What is the Shark PowerDetect AZ3900?

What does PowerDetect change while you clean?
Shark describes several responses in its UK product information: DirtDetect senses embedded dirt and boosts power; FloorDetect senses the floor type and changes brush-roll speed; EdgeDetect increases suction near edges; and DirectionDetect adapts to forward or reverse movement. These are feature descriptions from Shark, rather than proof that every surface or cleaning task will produce the same result. The functions are described on the UK-market AZ3900UKT product page.

In practical terms, the system is intended to reduce the need to switch manually between floor settings as you move from hard flooring to rugs or carpet. You can also choose one of the four listed settings on the Australian AZ3900. The independent observations available for this review come from the UK AZ3900UKT, not a controlled test of the Australian SKU.
How well does it clean, and what is Lift-Away like?
Ideal Home’s Lauren Bradbury reviewed the UK AZ3900UKT in a hands-on setting in November 2025. She reported noticing automatic adjustments between hard floors, rugs and dirtier areas, praised its edge cleaning, and found powered Lift-Away useful on stairs and beneath furniture. These are one reviewer’s qualitative observations of the UK model; they do not establish a comparative cleaning score or guarantee the same outcome in every home.

For pet owners, Shark’s UK model is described as a pet vacuum and its page lists Anti Hair Wrap Plus and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal. The Australian AZ3900 listing includes a Pet Power Brush. Those features may make it relevant to homes with pets, but the available independent review does not provide a controlled pet-hair comparison. Check the Australian listing and exact included tools rather than assuming the UK accessory set applies locally.

The Australian listing gives dimensions of 117 × 30.5 × 27 cm and four settings: Detect, Hard Floor, Carpet/Low Pile and Thick Carpet/Area Rug. Do not use the UK weight, guarantee or reviewer’s cord measurement as the specification for an Australian purchase.
What are the main day-to-day tradeoffs?
Carrying and moving it
At 7.068 kg on Shark’s Australian listing, this is a substantial upright to lift or carry. In her review of the 7.6 kg UK AZ3900UKT, Bradbury found it heavy to carry but said it seemed to propel itself once moving. That distinction matters if you need to carry a vacuum up stairs: powered movement on the floor does not remove the lifting weight.

Cord reach and handling
The Australian AZ3900’s listed 9 m cord avoids battery-runtime limits, but it still needs to be plugged in and routed around furniture. Bradbury found the UK model’s cord initially tangled and said it needed management; its 8 m cord let her clean between rooms in her home without unplugging. Room layouts differ, so cord reach depends on outlet placement and obstacles as well as the listed length.

Dust capacity and emptying
Both regional listings state a 1.3 L capacity. Bradbury reported that this was enough to clean her home multiple times before emptying the UK model’s bin. How often you empty it will depend on floor area, debris and how full you let the bin become.

Maintenance, filters and odour accessories
Maintenance directions and replacement parts can vary by model and market. Ideal Home reports that Shark recommends rinsing the UK model’s pre-motor foam and felt filters monthly, and its post-motor filter every 12 months, with at least 24 hours of air-drying before reinstalling. Confirm those instructions in the owner’s guide for your exact AZ3900 or AZ3900UKT before following them.
Shark lists Odour Neutraliser Technology for the UK variant, while the Australian listing provides a model-specific accessories and parts route. The cited information does not establish that a UK odour cartridge or replacement filter fits the Australian AZ3900. Match the part number to your market and vacuum model before ordering.
Who should consider the AZ3900?
The Australian AZ3900 is worth considering if you want an upright with a larger dust cup than many compact designs, a long mains cord and automatic floor/dirt responses, and you are comfortable lifting and storing an upright. Its powered Lift-Away format may suit households that want to clean stairs or beneath furniture without relying solely on the floor head.
