Shared hosting is a web-hosting setup in which websites use the same physical server and share resources such as processing power, memory and storage. Your site’s files are assigned space in your hosting account, while the provider runs the underlying server. It can be an inexpensive, straightforward way to start a modest website, but other sites’ workloads and the plan’s restrictions can affect performance and flexibility.

How shared hosting works

When you open a shared-hosting account, the provider allocates space for your website files and access to server resources. You manage that space through the account dashboard; the provider maintains the server environment. The exact tools, permissions and resource limits depend on the hosting plan.

Multiple websites or applications run on the same underlying server, drawing on its resources. AWS notes that a shared server may host hundreds of sites or applications, but that is an example—not a standard capacity or a limit that applies to every provider.

Sharing a server does not mean other customers automatically get access to your account’s files. File access, resource sharing and security are separate questions: the hosting provider assigns site files to account space, while the arrangement still means sites draw on shared infrastructure.

Advantages of shared hosting

Lower starting cost

Because the provider divides server costs among customers, shared hosting is commonly positioned as a lower-cost way to host a site. AWS describes it as a low-monthly-fee option and more affordable than cloud hosting in its comparison; these are general comparisons, not current price quotes. Actual prices and included services vary by provider and plan.

Simpler setup and management

The provider operates the underlying server, so customers generally do not need to manage a whole machine themselves. Plans may include tools such as a site builder or database software, though features differ. This makes shared hosting a practical starting point for people who want to focus on their site rather than server configuration.

Can accommodate several small sites

Some plans allow multiple websites under one account. Check the plan’s terms and limits before relying on this: the allowance is not inherent in every shared-hosting plan.

Disadvantages and limitations

Neighboring workloads can affect performance

Sites on the same server draw on shared resources. AWS warns, “If another website on your server experiences a traffic spike, it will affect your website’s performance.” This is vendor guidance describing a possible shared-resource effect, not a guarantee that every provider or incident will have the same result. There is no universal traffic or speed threshold that identifies when a shared plan will become too slow.

  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Less control over server configuration

Providers typically offer less control over server settings than VPS or dedicated hosting. For example, AWS notes that a shared plan may not let a customer install some third-party software. Permissions and available software depend on the provider and plan, so confirm that required applications and configurations are supported before signing up.

It may not suit a growing or demanding site

As traffic or processing needs rise, shared resources and plan limits can become a constraint. AWS says performance may begin to degrade as traffic increases and that costs can rise substantially as users and traffic grow, but does not establish a universal point for upgrading. Assess your site’s actual resource use, software needs and plan limits rather than relying on a fixed visitor count.

Shared hosting compared with other hosting types

Compare hosting options by how resources are allocated, how much control you receive, how neighboring workloads may affect you, and who is responsible for server management. “Cloud hosting” is a broad label; providers may use different architectures, so examine the specific service rather than assuming the label guarantees a particular design.

Type Resource arrangement Control and trade-offs
Shared hosting Multiple sites use resources on the same underlying server. Often a simpler, lower-cost starting point, with less configuration control and possible effects from neighboring workloads.
VPS hosting A physical server is partitioned into virtual servers, with more exclusive access to resources. Offers more control and may suit more complex sites or applications needing greater processing capacity; typically entails different management and cost trade-offs.
Dedicated hosting One customer has access to an entire physical server. Offers greater customization, but costs more and requires the technical capability to manage the server.
Cloud hosting Designs vary; AWS describes cloud models that use virtualization and resource pools, unlike traditional shared hosting on one server and operating system. Do not assume all services called “cloud” work alike. Check the provider’s architecture, resource allocation and management responsibilities.

Who is shared hosting a good fit for?

It can suit a personal website, blog, sole trader or small business with modest requirements, especially when low cost and ease of setup matter more than server-level control. It may be a poor fit if your site needs software or settings the provider restricts, or if its traffic and processing demands outgrow the plan. The available evidence does not establish a universal traffic number at which an upgrade is necessary.

What to check before choosing a plan

  • Confirm that the plan supports the software and configuration your site requires.
  • Check its stated resource limits, site-count allowance, included tools and management responsibilities.
  • Consider whether shared-resource performance is acceptable for your site’s needs; the hosting label alone cannot predict actual speed.
  • Compare the provider’s description of any VPS or cloud upgrade path, including resource allocation and control, rather than assuming all plans with the same label are equivalent.
