Sharad Pawar began a tour of drought-affected areas on Friday, October 2, 2026, calling for broader drought recognition and relief for farmers. Hindustan Times names Baramati, Purandar and Daund as stops in Pune district; a PTI report carried by Deccan Chronicle describes his interaction with villagers in Purandar as the opening of the wider tour.
Which Pune district talukas did Pawar visit?
Hindustan Times lists Baramati, Purandar and Daund in the Pune district itinerary. Reports describe Pawar meeting farmers or villagers in Purandar. The accounts differ in emphasis: Hindustan Times gives the three-stop Pune itinerary, while the PTI report carried by Deccan Chronicle identifies the Purandar interaction as the tour’s opening.
What concerns did farmers raise?
In Purandar, farmers described damage to Kharif crops after inadequate rainfall, along with water shortages and financial pressure on their families. They also raised the difficulty of obtaining water and fodder for livestock.

What relief did Pawar seek?
Pawar said he would take concerns raised during the tour to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the state government. He called for including more eligible talukas in the drought-affected list, arguing that all of Purandar should be declared affected.

- A 100% waiver on specified agricultural and allied loans, including loans held by self-help groups, as reported by Hindustan Times.
- Relaxed Employment Guarantee Scheme norms.
- Water tankers and drinking water for cattle.
- No disconnection of electricity to agricultural pumps.
- Adequate compensation for farmers; Hindustan Times reports that Pawar raised this in a letter to the chief minister dated September 27.
These were Pawar’s requests, not confirmed government decisions. The reports describe a planned follow-up with Fadnavis but do not establish that a later meeting took place or that the government adopted the proposals.
How many talukas were reported as drought-declared?
The PTI report carried by Deccan Chronicle said 265 of Maharashtra’s 358 talukas had been declared drought-affected. Pawar sought the inclusion of other eligible talukas. That figure is attributed here to the PTI report; the articles do not provide the underlying government order, so they do not independently establish the official classification or its current status.

Why the tour matters
The reports connect Pawar’s appeal to farmers’ immediate concerns—crop losses, scarce water and financial strain—and to the separate question of which areas qualify for formal drought recognition. As Pawar put it, “A large section of farmers in the state is in crisis due to poor rainfall.”
