Actor Shabana Azmi joined a Cockroach Janta Party protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2, 2026, where demonstrators demanded that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign. The protest was tied to concerns about the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reports about disagreements within the Commission.
What happened at Shivaji Park?
The gathering was described by Hindustan Times as a “Jail Bharo” protest. Mumbai Police had denied permission, but the demonstration went ahead. Hindustan Times reported that police estimated about 4,000 attendees by 5 p.m.; the Associated Press described the crowd as hundreds. Those are differing, attributed estimates, not a verified final count.
The party’s name appears as “Cockroach Janta Party” in Hindustan Times and “Cockroach Janata Party” in Associated Press coverage.

Organizers connected their demand to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, known as SIR, and to concerns about how the Commission makes decisions. Hindustan Times and India Today reported allegations that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on at least 14 occasions over a 10-month period. That figure is an allegation reported by those outlets, not an independently established finding.

The Election Commission’s reported response was that the three-member Commission made decisions, including those related to SIR, unanimously. The Associated Press reported that the Commission disputed describing internal discussions as formal written objections, saying the coverage reflected differing views and deliberations. AP also reported that the Commission and government denied wrongdoing.
