To set up a Samsung Galaxy camera, open the Camera app, choose a framing and video size your phone supports, then select a mode for the scene. On the Galaxy A17 and S26, settings are under Quick controls (the four-dot icon) > Settings; other models and software versions may arrange the controls differently.
Galaxy camera menus and features vary by model and region. Treat the options below as a practical checklist, not a promise that every Galaxy phone has every control. If a setting is missing, check the support guide for your exact model.
Open Camera and find its settings

Open Camera from your Apps screen. Depending on your phone, you may also be able to launch it from the lock screen or by double-pressing the Side button. The Side-button shortcut is optional and model-dependent.

On the Galaxy A17 and S26 examples, tap the four-dot Quick controls icon, then tap Settings. Other Galaxy models may use a different icon or place settings elsewhere in the Camera app. See Samsung’s Galaxy A17 guide and Galaxy S26 guide.

Choose a photo ratio and video size
Set the framing for the finished image
Before changing the aspect ratio, consider where you will view or share the photo. A square frame can suit a square post; a taller frame can suit a phone screen. The available choices depend on the model. Samsung Gulf gives 1:1, 3:4, 9:16, and Full screen as examples, not a universal list. Check resolution in Video mode
Switch to Video mode and inspect the video-size control to see what your phone offers. Options are model-specific: Samsung’s Galaxy A17 guide, for example, lists FHD and HD and says the frame rate cannot be adjusted on that model. Do not assume those are the only choices—or that a frame-rate control is unavailable—on other Galaxy phones. Galaxy A17 camera guide

Pick a camera mode for the scene

Start with Photo or Video if you do not want to adjust exposure yourself. Switch to Pro only when you want to manage its manual controls. Samsung’s Galaxy A17 and Galaxy A27 guides illustrate how mode availability differs between phones.

Check optional camera assists
Look through your Camera settings for aids that suit how you shoot. Their names and availability vary by model and software.
- Scene optimization or intelligent optimization: On supported devices, the camera can adjust aspects such as exposure, contrast, and white balance based on the scene.
- Document scanning: A supported phone may detect a document in view and offer a scan. QR scanning is another possible camera option.
- Tracking autofocus: If available, this can keep a selected moving subject in focus.
- Video stabilization: This can help reduce shake in recorded video, but it does not replace a stable shooting position.
- Composition lines and shot suggestions: These can help with framing; they are optional guides rather than requirements.
- Location tags: Some models can save location information with photos. Check this setting if you do not want location data attached.

Choose a convenient shutter method
If your phone supports alternate shooting methods, they can make selfies or hands-free framing easier. On the Galaxy S26, open Camera > Quick controls > Settings > Shooting methods. Options documented for that model include using the volume buttons, voice commands, a floating shutter button, and palm recognition. Check your own phone’s menu for its available methods.
On the S26, assigning the volume buttons to take pictures means they cannot adjust sound during video recording. That trade-off and the available options may differ on other models. Galaxy S26 camera guide

Keep the phone steady for Night mode
Night photos can blur if the phone moves while capturing the image. Samsung Gulf advises: “Keep your phone steady or use a tripod for the best results.” A stable surface is a simple alternative if you do not have a tripod. Samsung Gulf Night mode guidance
