On a new or recently reset Google Pixel, check these six areas rather than assuming every feature is disabled: theft protection, screen-lock and device-finding readiness, call screening, spam and scam detection, emergency tools, and privacy controls. Some options are enabled by default, while others depend on your Pixel model, Android and app versions, or country. Menu names may differ slightly.
1. Check theft protection
Open Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection and inspect the available options. Google says some theft-protection features may already be on; check the switches on your own phone instead of treating them as disabled by default. A screen lock is required, and some features require Android 15 or later. Which options appear depends on the device.

2. Set a screen lock and prepare to find your phone
A screen lock is the foundation for device security and theft protection. Set a PIN, pattern, or password, then review Google’s device-finding options before you need them. Google includes Find My Device among the Pixel security settings, alongside Play Protect, security updates, and Google Account security review.

3. Choose a call-screening level
In the Phone app, open More > Settings, then look for Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen. Review the protection level and any automatic screening options available on your device. Google documents automatic screening categories—including spam, possibly faked numbers, and first-time callers—on Pixel 7 and newer. Menus and features vary by phone and Phone app version.

Screening can help you decide whether to answer, but the available controls and their behavior depend on your device. Follow Google’s call-screening instructions for the options shown in your Phone app.

Check the Phone app’s caller ID and spam protections, and the spam controls in Google Messages. Eligible Pixel phones may also offer scam alerts. These tools can flag suspicious activity, but they are not comprehensive: an alert is not a guarantee that a call or message is unsafe, and no alert is not proof that it is safe.

5. Review emergency features and contacts
Open the Personal Safety app or its settings and review your emergency contacts, requested permissions, and available safety features. Check whether Car Crash Detection and Safety Check are available and configured for your device and location. Their coverage is not universal.

Car Crash Detection does not work while Airplane mode or Battery Saver is on. Read Google’s Pixel emergency-help guidance and confirm the settings on your own phone; availability and operation can vary by device and location.
6. Audit privacy and lock-screen access
In Settings, open Privacy to review the Privacy Dashboard, Permission manager, and camera and microphone access controls. The dashboard helps you see recent access; the permission controls let you restrict apps that do not need access. Also review notifications on the lock screen and choose whether to show sensitive content. Hiding message details can improve privacy, while showing them makes notifications more convenient to read at a glance.

Keep battery settings in perspective
Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization are separate from the six security and privacy checks above. Google says they are on when you first get a Pixel and recommends keeping them on. A new or reset phone may need a few weeks to learn your usage. “For best results, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on.” Google Pixel Phone Help: Get started with battery and charging on a Pixel phone.
Charging optimization is a separate choice. Adaptive Charging learns your charging routine and may take about 14 days to learn your habits. On supported devices, an 80% charge limit is another option if prioritizing long-term battery health matters more than charging to full.
