To use Google Pay for in-store taps on a Samsung phone, set up an eligible card in Google Wallet, turn on NFC, choose Google Wallet as the phone’s default contactless payment app, and use a screen lock. Your exact eligibility depends on your phone, software, country, bank and card.
Check whether your Samsung phone and card are eligible
Google’s general app guidance calls for Android 9 or later and current versions of Google Play Services and Google Wallet. Contactless payments also require NFC hardware, NFC turned on, a screen lock and a phone that meets Google’s security requirements. Google says rooted devices and work profiles are unsupported for the app. Check Google Wallet’s app requirements and the supported countries and regions for current details.
Card eligibility is specific to the country, issuer and card product. A contactless symbol on a physical card does not by itself mean that the card can be added to Google Wallet for in-store payments. Check Google’s card-addition guidance and ask your bank if your particular card is supported.

Add your card in Google Wallet
- Install or open Google Wallet from Google Play and sign in to your Google Account.
- In Wallet, tap Add to Wallet, then Payment card and New credit or debit card.
- Scan the card or enter its details manually, then follow the prompts and accept any issuer terms.
- Complete any verification requested by your bank, such as a confirmation through the issuer’s app or another method it provides.
If Wallet asks you to finish setup, complete that flow. Saving a card in the app does not necessarily mean it is eligible for contactless payment at a store; the issuer may reject enrollment or require verification.

Turn on NFC and select Google Wallet as the default
Open your Samsung phone’s Settings and search for “NFC.” Turn NFC on if it is off. Google notes that the steps can differ by device; its general route is Settings → search “NFC” → Contactless payments → Payment default → Google Wallet → OK. See Google’s default-payment-app instructions.
On Samsung devices covered by the cited Galaxy manual, the representative route is Settings → Connections → NFC and contactless payments → Contactless payments → Payment, then select the app. Menu names and locations vary by model and software, so use Settings search if the route differs. Choosing Google Wallet makes it the selected app for NFC contactless payments; it does not require you to remove another wallet app. If Wallet is not listed, open or update it and check the NFC and contactless-payment settings again.
Make a contactless payment
- At checkout, look for a contactless-payment or Google Pay symbol on the terminal.
- Unlock your phone and hold it near the reader. The Wallet app does not need to be open for this payment flow.
- Wait for the confirmation mark. If prompted, verify with your screen lock. Google says the default card is used unless you choose another card in Wallet; see its default-card guidance.
If the reader does not respond, hold the phone near it for a few seconds and try another position. NFC antenna placement differs between phones. Google’s full instructions are in Tap to pay with your phone.

Troubleshoot setup and declined taps
NFC is off or the setting is missing
Search Settings for “NFC” and enable it. If no NFC setting appears, check the specifications for your exact Samsung model; not every phone has NFC. Contactless payment requires NFC hardware.
Google Wallet is missing from the payment-default list
Open Wallet, make sure it is up to date, then search Settings for NFC and check the contactless-payment default. Samsung menu labels vary, so look under Connections or use Settings search rather than relying on one fixed path.

The card cannot be set up
Complete any “Finish setup” or issuer-verification prompt. Check support for your country and exact card, then contact the bank if the card is not listed or enrollment fails. Physical-card contactless capability does not establish Wallet eligibility.

Check Play Protect certification in the Play Store settings. Google says rooted phones, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, developer versions and modified factory software may fail its security requirements for in-store payments. Use software that meets Google’s requirements rather than trying to bypass the check. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

The terminal does not register the tap
Unlock the phone, hold it near the reader for a few seconds and try a different position. If possible, test another contactless terminal. The NFC antenna location varies by phone.
The payment is declined
A decline can come from the issuer or from the terminal’s acceptance of the card network, rather than from a setup problem. Confirm that the merchant accepts mobile contactless payments and that the card network is accepted. Contact your bank about the decline or card eligibility; Google says an issuer-declined transaction does not mean you were charged.

For a particular tap to succeed, the phone must have NFC and meet Google’s security requirements; Wallet must be supported for the user’s country and the exact card; Google Wallet must be selected as the NFC payment default; and the merchant terminal must accept the payment. A failure at any one of these points can prevent a tap even if the card appears in the app.
