To watch DISH on a smart TV, connect the DISH receiver to the TV, turn both on, press SAT on the DISH remote, then select the TV input that matches the cable—such as HDMI 1. This is separate from connecting the television to Wi-Fi: the TV’s internet connection and the receiver-to-TV picture connection serve different purposes.
Before connecting the DISH receiver
- If the TV is still showing its initial setup screen, complete the manufacturer’s setup first. Contact the TV manufacturer if you cannot get through that setup.
- Check the ports and cables already available on both the TV and receiver before buying anything. The required connection depends on the equipment and room arrangement; a new HDMI cable is not needed if a suitable cable is already connected.
- If an audio receiver or other device sits between the DISH receiver and TV, make sure it is powered on.
DISH’s receiver setup instructions describe the same-room and different-room arrangements separately, so use the steps below that match your setup.

Connect a DISH receiver in the same room as the TV
- Connect the video cable between the DISH receiver and TV, and check that it is firmly seated at both ends.
- Turn on the TV and any equipment connected between the receiver and TV. Check the receiver’s front panel: if its green light is off, press the receiver’s power button.
- Press and release SAT on the DISH remote.
- Using the TV remote or its physical controls, press Input or Source. Pause between presses while cycling through inputs until the DISH picture appears. Choose the input matching the connection—for example, HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 for the corresponding HDMI port.
Once the picture appears, you can watch DISH. The TV does not need to be connected to Wi-Fi just to display the receiver’s picture.
Connect a TV in a different room
DISH documents a separate procedure for a replacement TV used in a different-room TV2 arrangement. Connect the coax cable from the wall to the TV securely, then turn on the TV and any relevant intermediate equipment. Check that the receiver is on, and tune the TV to channel 60. If there is no picture, try channel 73 or the channel used by the previous TV.

- Designed for wall mounting
- RF-remote capable without external antenna
- Works quickly and quietly
These channel instructions apply to the described TV2 setup; they are not universal instructions for every DISH receiver or room configuration. See DISH’s receiver setup guidance if your arrangement differs.
Pair the DISH remote with the TV
If the DISH picture works but the DISH remote does not control the TV’s power or volume, pair the remote with the television. The exact button sequence depends on the remote and receiver generation. DISH’s remote-control instructions cover the pairing process.

Do you need to connect the receiver to the internet?
No—not for the basic task of showing DISH on the TV. The picture comes through the receiver-to-TV connection and the TV’s selected input. A receiver internet connection is for receiver features, and its setup depends on the receiver model.
For Hopper receivers, DISH describes connecting directly by Ethernet or using the receiver’s Wi-Fi setup: open Settings > Internet > Wireless Setup, select a network, enter its password, and save. Do not assume every DISH receiver has built-in Wi-Fi or supports the same adapter. DISH’s receiver settings guidance notes model-specific requirements, including the Netgear WNDA3100v2 for compatible ViP receivers.

Connect a soundbar without changing the DISH picture connection
Keep the DISH receiver connected to the TV. For soundbar audio, DISH describes connecting the soundbar to the TV by HDMI or optical. If using HDMI ARC, connect to the TV’s ARC-labeled port when available and enable HDMI-CEC in the TV settings. If ARC is unavailable or you are not using HDMI for sound, the documented alternative is an optical cable from the soundbar to the TV. Check the ports on your equipment before buying a cable.
To use the DISH remote for soundbar volume, open Settings > Remote Control > Auxiliary Device > Audio Accessory, run the pairing wizard, and select the option to control auxiliary-device volume. See DISH’s soundbar setup instructions for the documented connection options.

Fix common DISH-to-TV setup problems
The TV shows a black screen
- Make sure the TV and any device between it and the receiver are powered on.
- Check that the receiver is on; if its green front-panel light is off, press the receiver’s power button.
- Reseat the video cable at both ends.
- Press SAT on the DISH remote, then use the TV’s Input or Source control to cycle to the input matching the cable.
The picture works, but the DISH remote will not control TV power or volume
Use the TV pairing wizard in Settings > Remote Control. The available button sequence varies by remote.

The receiver will not connect to Wi-Fi
Check the receiver model and its specific instructions. Hopper Wi-Fi steps do not prove that every receiver has built-in wireless, and adapter compatibility varies by model.
There is still no picture
If the television itself cannot complete setup, contact the TV manufacturer. For receiver or DISH signal assistance, contact DISH support through its receiver support page.
