To install a Blink Video Doorbell, first identify whether it is the original model or Video Doorbell (2nd Gen): their battery, transformer, and Sync Module requirements differ. Set it up in the Blink app before mounting. If you connect it to existing doorbell wiring, check the correct model’s transformer range and turn off power at the breaker before handling wires.
Check the model and choose how it will work
Find the generation on the device packaging or in its product information before buying batteries or beginning installation. Do not assume that the two generations use the same batteries or wiring specifications.

Blink says a Sync Module can extend the original Video Doorbell’s battery life to up to two years of normal operation. This is the manufacturer’s claim, not a guarantee; actual battery life depends on use and conditions. See Blink’s Video Doorbell setup guide.

Both generations require AA lithium non-rechargeable batteries, including when the doorbell is wired. Wiring is supplemental power and, where compatible, a way to ring an existing chime; it does not replace the specified batteries.

These figures come from Blink Support’s model-specific instructions: original Video Doorbell wired installation, Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) mounting and wiring, and 2nd Gen battery information. Follow the polarity markings in the battery compartment and use the guide for your exact model.
Set up the doorbell in the Blink app before mounting
- Install the Blink app and create an account or sign in.
- If you are installing a 2nd Gen doorbell, add a Sync Module to a system first. For the original model, do this first if you plan to use a Sync Module. Scan the module’s QR code in the app, connect it to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, and wait for setup confirmation.
- Insert the correct batteries for your generation. In the app, choose to add a device, scan the QR code inside the battery compartment, and select or create a system.
- Connect the doorbell to Wi-Fi by following the app prompts. Complete setup before mounting, and choose the wired or non-wired path when prompted. Follow the instructions shown for your model and selected mode.
Install it with existing doorbell wiring
Only use the wired path if the existing transformer matches your model’s specifications and you are comfortable working with doorbell wiring. If you cannot verify the transformer rating, do not guess or connect the doorbell; ask a licensed professional. Blink warns that electrical work carries a shock risk.

- Check the transformer output against the model-specific table above. Compatible voltage alone is not enough; frequency and VA rating must also meet the stated limits.
- Turn off power to the doorbell circuit at the breaker before handling wires. Follow the app and your exact model’s official installation guide for the chime and wiring steps.
- Restore power only when the installation instructions indicate, then use the app and doorbell to check operation and test the indoor chime.
Blink Support advises: “If you cannot verify your transformer’s specifications or are unsure about installation, please consult a licensed professional.” The warning appears in its 2nd Gen mounting guide; the same caution is sensible for wiring any doorbell.

Mount the doorbell and adjust its view
Use the mounting plate and paper template supplied with the doorbell, and follow the app’s instructions for the model and surface. For the 2nd Gen, Blink’s mounting guide lists a drill, a 3/32-inch bit for screws, a 7/32-inch bit for anchors, a Phillips-head screwdriver, and tape for the template. Blink specifies a mounting height of 40–48 inches for that model; use its instructions for placement and installation details.

- Position and tape the template at the chosen location. Check that the camera has a clear view of the approach to your door.
- Mark and prepare the mounting points using the supplied hardware and appropriate anchors for the surface.
- Fasten the mounting plate, attach the doorbell securely, and confirm in the app that it is connected and the view is usable.
The included mount points the camera straight out. If that angle does not capture the area you need, Blink lists a separately sold corner mount with 25° of horizontal adjustment to the left or right, and a wedge mount with 5° of vertical tilt. Check that any mount fits your exact generation before purchase. Blink describes the doorbell as IP-54 weather-resistant and says the seal is in the battery door; that rating does not mean the device is waterproof.
