To route Claude Code launched by T3 Code through an LLM gateway, configure the gateway URL and credential as environment variables on T3 Code’s Claude provider, then verify the active route with Claude Code’s /status command. You can use OpenRouter as a hosted route or point the provider at a LiteLLM gateway you operate. Gateway requests use the gateway’s upstream billing—not your Claude subscription limits—and non-Anthropic models are not guaranteed to work like Claude.

How T3 Code applies Claude Code settings

T3 Code’s Claude provider is where you specify the Claude Code executable, an optional configuration directory, and provider-specific environment variables. The usual binary path is claude. Leave the config-directory field empty to use Claude Code’s normal configuration directory, or set a separate directory to isolate gateway credentials and state from your regular Claude environment. T3 Code passes that directory through CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR; it does not change HOME. Don’t use a changed home directory as a substitute.

In T3 Code, add or edit a Claude provider in Settings. Enter claude as the binary path, optionally set a dedicated config directory, and add gateway variables in the provider’s Environment variables section—not Launch arguments. Mark API tokens as sensitive. T3 Code says sensitive values are stored as server secrets and are not returned to the app after saving. Separate config directories represent separate Claude environments; a thread does not simply switch between them. See the T3 Code Claude provider configuration.

Choose a gateway route

Route Who operates it Credential and model setup Usage and billing
OpenRouter OpenRouter hosts the gateway. Use its Anthropic-compatible endpoint and an OpenRouter API key. Model-role variables and model identifiers can change; follow its current integration guide. Requests use OpenRouter credits; usage, including reasoning tokens, appears in its dashboard.
LiteLLM You or your organization deploys and maintains the self-hosted gateway. Use the gateway root URL, a LiteLLM virtual key, and a model name configured in LiteLLM. Usage and upstream billing depend on the gateway and provider configuration; LiteLLM documents virtual keys, budgets, logging, and an admin interface.

Both routes use an Anthropic-format interface, but compatible endpoints do not guarantee identical model behavior or feature support. The gateway path also changes who holds the upstream credential and who is responsible for its operations.

Set up OpenRouter in T3 Code

Use the endpoint shown in T3 Code’s Claude provider guide: https://openrouter.ai/api. For this interactive configuration, put the OpenRouter key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and leave ANTHROPIC_API_KEY empty. If you want the gateway configuration isolated from your normal Claude state, create and use a dedicated config directory.

  1. In T3 Code Settings, create or edit a Claude provider. Set the binary path to claude and, if desired, set a separate CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR such as ~/.claude_openrouter_home. Create that directory if it does not exist.
  2. In Environment variables, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://openrouter.ai/api, set ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to your OpenRouter API key, and set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to an empty value. Mark the token sensitive.
  3. If this config directory was previously used to sign in to Anthropic, start Claude Code using that provider and run /logout to clear the cached login before using the gateway. Relaunch Claude Code after changing environment variables.
  4. Start a session from the T3 Code provider, run /status, and confirm the base URL is https://openrouter.ai/api and the token source is the intended environment variable. Check the OpenRouter Activity Dashboard for observed requests.

OpenRouter documents the Anthropic-compatible Messages API and details its current model-role environment variables in its Claude Code integration guide. Treat the model identifiers and role-variable examples there as changeable rather than permanent configuration values.

Point T3 Code at a LiteLLM gateway

LiteLLM’s Claude Code integration uses the Anthropic Messages API at /v1/messages. Set the base URL to the gateway root, then supply a LiteLLM virtual key and a model name that exists in LiteLLM’s configuration. For a local gateway, the environment values would look like this, with your own key and configured model name substituted:

ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="http://localhost:4000"
ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="<LiteLLM virtual key>"
ANTHROPIC_MODEL="<model_name from LiteLLM config>"
  1. Deploy or access the LiteLLM gateway and identify its root URL, virtual key, and configured model name.
  2. In T3 Code Settings, edit the intended Claude provider. Set the binary path to claude, optionally choose a dedicated config directory, and enter the three values above in Environment variables. Mark the virtual key sensitive.
  3. If your shell has a real ANTHROPIC_API_KEY set, unset it for the session so the intended LiteLLM virtual key is used.
  4. Launch Claude Code from that T3 Code provider and run /status to inspect the active base URL and token source. Check the gateway’s activity or usage view for the request.

Match ANTHROPIC_MODEL to a name configured in LiteLLM. Claude Code’s /model picker identifiers and LiteLLM aliases are not necessarily interchangeable: selecting a built-in Anthropic identifier can fail if that exact name is not configured in the gateway. Consult LiteLLM’s current Claude Code client setup for configuration and endpoint details.

Check the route and diagnose common failures

Claude Code’s /status is the first check after launch: confirm the base URL and the source of the active token. Then look for the request in the gateway’s own activity or usage view. If status shows a Claude account login, an unexpected credential source, or the wrong endpoint, verify that the intended T3 Code provider launched the process, reload the environment, clear a stale login when appropriate, and relaunch.

  • OpenRouter returns an endpoint error: Check that the base URL is https://openrouter.ai/api, not /api/v1, which is used for other API styles.
  • OpenRouter authentication conflicts: Confirm the key is in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is empty for this configuration, and the dedicated config directory is not using a stale Anthropic login. Use /logout in that environment if needed.
  • LiteLLM cannot find a model: Set ANTHROPIC_MODEL to a configured LiteLLM model name; do not assume a Claude Code picker identifier is an existing gateway alias.
  • Requests fail or features behave differently with another model: An Anthropic-compatible API is not a promise of Claude-equivalent behavior. Check gateway logs and the model/provider’s compatibility, and consider using an Anthropic model if Claude Code features you rely on do not work.
  • Credentials appear in the wrong environment: Check the provider-specific environment variables and CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR in T3 Code. Avoid putting credentials in Launch arguments or applying them globally by accident.

Understand the billing and operating responsibilities

Using a gateway credential or an active apiKeyHelper means Claude Code uses that credential instead of the developer’s Claude subscription login. Subscription usage limits do not apply to those requests. The credential owner pays through the upstream route—for example, an organization’s Anthropic Console or cloud-provider account, or gateway service credits. Setting only ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL does not replace a subscription credential. Check the billing and usage records for the account behind the credential, not just the Claude subscription page.

OpenRouter is a hosted service; its guide says requests are charged to OpenRouter credits and usage is shown in its dashboard. With LiteLLM self-hosted, you or your organization take responsibility for deploying and maintaining the gateway, its credentials, model configuration, budgets, logging, and compatibility as Claude Code changes. LiteLLM describes its open-source library and separately documents its self-hosted AI Gateway/Proxy in its Getting Started documentation.

Anthropic describes gateways as a way to centralize credentials, usage tracking, budgets or rate limits, audit logging, and provider switching. It also says it does not endorse, maintain, or audit third-party gateway products, and does not support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through a gateway. A single Anthropic-format endpoint may make provider switching possible without changing client settings, but it does not remove the gateway operator’s compatibility and maintenance responsibilities. See Anthropic’s guidance on other LLM gateways.
