SEO still matters in AI search. Google says its generative Search features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems, and Bing says SEO fundamentals support eligibility for AI-generated experiences and citations. What has changed is the set of places where a site may be discovered or cited—and the need to measure those surfaces separately. There is no documented GEO shortcut that replaces crawlability, useful content and clear site structure, and following best practices does not guarantee a ranking or citation.
Does SEO still matter for AI search?
Yes. Google Search Central says, “The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features in Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.” Bing’s Webmaster Guidelines likewise connect crawling, indexing and ranking fundamentals with eligibility for AI-generated experiences, grounding results and citations.
That is a foundation, not a promise of placement. Neither platform says that meeting its guidance guarantees that a page will appear in an AI answer. A site can be technically accessible and still not be selected for a particular answer; a citation count or appearance in one feature is not proof of a conventional ranking, click or conversion.

Google also says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” In practice, SEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are not competing disciplines with separate magic switches. Work sometimes labeled GEO is most useful when it improves the same things that make a page understandable and valuable to people and search systems.

What changed in search visibility?
Visibility now spans more than a list of web results. A page may be surfaced in a conventional result, included in a Google AI Search feature, or cited in a Microsoft AI answer. Those experiences have different reporting and selection mechanisms, so a single metric cannot represent every platform or answer surface.
Google reported in its June 3, 2026 announcement, updated August 31, 2026, that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users. These are Google-reported product-reach figures, not independent audits, measures of visits to any particular site, or guarantees of referral traffic.
Measurement is also becoming more explicit. Google announced generative AI performance reporting in Search Console and a control for whether site content can appear in and help ground its generative AI Search features. Google said that control’s rollout had reached all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. Bing introduced AI Performance reporting as a public preview on February 10, 2026. The reports cover their named products and supported experiences—not every AI answer engine on the web.

What should website owners do differently?
Keep pages crawlable and indexable
Check that important pages can be crawled, that the versions you want surfaced are indexable, and that URL variations are consolidated sensibly. Make key information accessible as page content rather than relying on a system that prevents search engines from understanding the page. These are ordinary search foundations, not a new GEO layer.
When a page is absent from search or answer reporting, start by checking whether the page is accessible and eligible for the relevant platform. Do not infer that adding an AI-specific file or markup will overcome a crawl, indexing or content problem.
Make the page’s purpose and claims clear
Use a precise title, descriptive headings and a direct explanation of what the page answers. Support claims with relevant evidence and make important qualifications easy to find. A page should contribute useful information—not merely restate familiar material in a format intended to look machine-readable.
Rank #3
Google recommends unique, helpful, reliable, people-first content. Accurate structured data can help supported search features interpret a page, but it should match what visitors can actually see. It is not a special AI ranking switch.
Avoid formulaic visibility hacks
Google cautions against unnecessary AI text files, contrived content chunking and inauthentic mentions presented as special ways to win visibility. A tool, template, schema block or repeated phrase cannot guarantee inclusion in an AI answer. Treat claims about such tactics as hypotheses to verify against the platform’s own documentation and your platform-specific data.
Test changes without sacrificing site quality
If you want to test a content or technical change, define what it is intended to improve and which supported report could show a relevant change. Keep the experiment bounded, note when it was made, and compare the same platform and metric over a sensible date range. Do not treat a simultaneous rise in citations as proof that one change caused it.
How can you measure AI search visibility?
Use first-party reporting for the platform whose visibility you want to understand. Google Search Console reports on Google Search, including announced generative AI performance reporting. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance reports on specified Microsoft experiences. Microsoft Clarity also documents a Citations feature and connections with Bing Webmaster Tools or Google Search Console. None should be described as a complete view of all AI search.
| Option | What its documentation says it covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Google announced generative AI performance reporting for impressions in AI Search features, as well as a control over site participation in those features. | Google Search surfaces only. Check the current account and product documentation for availability and report definitions; a reported impression is not itself a click or conversion. |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Citation activity across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and selected partner integrations, with cited URLs, trends and grounding queries. | Launched as a public preview on February 10, 2026. Its coverage is limited to supported experiences, and citation activity should not be treated as rank or traffic. |
| Microsoft Clarity Citations | AI-answer citation visibility; its documentation describes connecting with Bing Webmaster Tools or Google Search Console. | Microsoft product reporting. Verify its current setup and coverage before treating it as comprehensive. |
When comparing products or reports, identify what each one actually counts before drawing a conclusion:
Recommended Free Tools
- Platform coverage: Which answer products and integrations are included?
- Page detail: Can you identify cited URLs, or only see an aggregate?
- Context: Does the report expose a grounding query or other explanation for the citation?
- Metric meaning: Is the value an impression, citation, click or another event?
- Time and export: What date ranges and export options are available?
- Workflow fit: Can you connect observations to your existing analytics without confusing unlike measures?
A citation count is not a universal “AI rank,” and no one report establishes a site’s full share of visibility across answer engines. Keep platform, report, metric and date range attached to every number you share.

How should you evaluate SEO and GEO tools?
Start with the reporting available directly from the platform. Then decide what work you need a third-party tool to do: technical auditing, query research, content inventory, visibility monitoring or reporting workflow. Compare tools on those concrete needs rather than on claims of secret access to ranking systems.
Google warns that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. A vendor may provide observations, estimates or workflow features, but that is not the same as seeing Google’s internal selection process. Validate recommendations against official guidance, inspect the evidence behind any metric, and be wary of prescriptions that promise guaranteed citations.
What is the practical SEO and AI-search workflow?
- Fix eligibility first. Review important pages for crawlability, indexability, URL consolidation and accessible content.
- Improve the page itself. Clarify the purpose, strengthen the information, support claims and ensure structured data—where relevant—matches visible content.
- Select the surface. Decide whether you are assessing Google Search, Microsoft AI experiences or another specifically documented product; do not merge their figures.
- Use the corresponding report. Review Google Search Console for Google Search reporting or Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance for its supported Microsoft citation activity. Use Clarity only within its documented configuration and scope.
- Record a baseline and changes. Note the date range, pages, platform and metric, then log material site or content changes so later comparisons have context.
- Interpret cautiously. Separate impressions, citations, visits and outcomes; a movement in one is not automatically a movement in the others.
- Repeat what helps readers. Keep improvements that make pages more useful and understandable, regardless of whether a single AI surface changes its visibility.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Official guidance from Google and Microsoft supports a clear direction: retain sound SEO foundations, publish useful and understandable pages, and use each platform’s own reporting to assess its supported surfaces. It does not establish a universal optimization recipe, a complete cross-engine visibility metric, or a guaranteed traffic effect from appearing in an AI answer. The most defensible strategy is to improve the site for people and systems, then measure each platform on its own terms.
