Indian equities rebounded in early trade on Friday, October 9, 2026, after Thursday’s sharp selloff. The gains are intraday readings, not a confirmed recovery. The sources available for this update do not show how Friday’s session closed or whether the early bounce held, so treat it as a possible short-term technical rebound until a closing figure is published.

The levels to keep apart

Three reference points are easy to confuse: Thursday’s close, Friday’s early trade, and Friday’s close. Only the first two are established in the reporting cited here.

Reference point Sensex Nifty 50 Source
Thursday, October 8 close 71,593.24, down 1,045.46 points (-1.44%) 22,231.80, down 371.25 points (-1.64%) PTI for both indices; NSE’s market page also shows the Nifty 50 close at 15:30 IST
Friday, October 9, 9:36 IST (Sensex) and 9:37 IST (Nifty) 72,046.19, up 452.95 points (+0.63%) 22,391.80, up 157.75 points (+0.71%) The Times of India live report; values were updated during the session
Friday, October 9 close Not stated in the sources cited Not stated in the sources cited No closing figure has been published in these sources

Two cautions apply to the Friday row. First, the live report’s Nifty change of 157.75 points does not match the gap between its level and the official October 8 close: 22,391.80 is 160.00 points above 22,231.80. The reference line used in that report appears to differ slightly, so quote the level and the percentage rather than combining the point change with the official close. Second, NSE’s market page also displayed a GIFT Nifty futures reference for October 9. That is a futures indication. It is neither the cash index nor a guarantee of how the market would open.

What drove Thursday’s selloff

Reuters attributed the October 8 decline to a combination of elevated crude prices, rising global bond yields, a weaker rupee and inflation concerns, following the Reserve Bank of India’s hawkish rate action earlier in the week. PTI’s account adds the policy detail that matters most for rate-sensitive stocks.

Rates and the RBI decision

According to PTI, the RBI raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026. It was the central bank’s first hike in nearly four years, and it moved the policy stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening.” Higher policy rates tend to weigh on interest-sensitive sectors such as banks, real estate and autos, which is the channel Geojit Investments’ head of research described. Vinod Nair said: “The domestic market continued in its sharp sell-off mode as the ripple effects of hawkish RBI policy weighed on rate-sensitive sectors, effectively resetting near-term valuation multiples. This headwind was further amplified by persistent FII outflows, harder bond yields, and a depreciating INR.” That is PTI’s attribution of the quote, reported on October 8, 2026.

Foreign selling and domestic buying

Reuters reported net foreign portfolio investor selling of ₹129.44 billion (about $1.3 billion) on October 8. It described this as the largest single-day outflow since May 29, 2026. Domestic institutional investors were net buyers of ₹107.03 billion over the same session. The split is context for the session’s direction, not a forecast of what comes next.

Rank #2

Market breadth

PTI reported that every BSE sectoral index ended lower on October 8. The BSE SmallCap Select index fell 2.58% and the MidCap Select index fell 2.53%. On the BSE, 3,426 stocks declined, 1,003 advanced and 225 were unchanged. These are PTI’s figures; they were not checked against direct BSE releases for this article. The breadth shows the selloff was wide, not confined to heavyweights.

Crude oil: the swing factor for the rebound

Reuters said Brent hovered near $104 per barrel after rising about 4% on Thursday, amid Middle East tensions and fears of supply disruption linked to a hurricane approaching the US Gulf Coast. PTI put Brent at $104.50, a rise of 4.25%. The two agencies used slightly different levels and percentages, so attribute each figure to its source.

India imports most of its crude. A sustained rise in oil prices widens the import bill, weighs on the rupee and feeds into inflation expectations, which is why the same commodity move feeds into the rate and currency concerns described above. For Friday, the practical question is whether Brent holds its gains. If it keeps rising, the pressure on the rupee and bond yields that hit Thursday’s session would likely remain in play.

Why IT stocks are in focus

Reuters said weakness in heavyweight IT stocks could limit any recovery. Two developments were cited, and they affect the sector differently.

Tata Consultancy Services growth

Reuters reported that Tata Consultancy Services recorded its weakest September-quarter revenue growth in three years. That raised concerns about client spending and demand across the sector. It is one company’s result, and it should be read as a signal about spending rather than a verdict on every Indian IT firm.

US labor-certification action

Reuters also reported that the US suspended major IT outsourcing firms from the Permanent Labor Certification Program, which the report described as a key green-card pathway. The development matters most for firms that rely heavily on that route for staffing. Sumit Singhania, head of research at Bajaj Broking, said: “Indian IT companies are already operating under pressure, and this additional regulatory development adds another layer of uncertainty.” That quote is from Reuters’ October 9, 2026 report, republished by MarketScreener.

How to tell whether the rebound is more than a bounce

A technical rebound after a sharp, oversold decline is a short-term pattern. It becomes more meaningful only if several conditions hold at the same time. The reference levels below come from the October 8 close in the table above.

  • Index levels: whether Nifty 50 holds above its October 8 close of 22,231.80 and Sensex holds above 71,593.24 at the end of the session.
  • Oil: whether Brent stops rising, or at least stops adding to rupee and bond-yield pressure.
  • Flows: whether foreign selling eases from the October 8 level, and whether domestic buying continues to offset it.
  • Rates sensitivity: whether banks and other rate-sensitive sectors recover along with the broader index, rather than lagging.
  • IT: whether the sector stops dragging the index, or whether the TCS and US labor-certification concerns keep weighing on it.

If most of these hold through the close, the early gains would look more like a genuine recovery. If one or more reverse, the Friday move would be better described as a brief pause in a weak trend.

What is not yet established

Friday’s closing levels for Sensex and Nifty 50, the day’s final sector breadth and the October 9 foreign and domestic flow figures are not available in the sources cited here. The RBI and BSE figures above are attributed to PTI and Reuters reports rather than checked against primary releases. Readers who need settled figures should wait for the official end-of-day data from NSE and BSE and the RBI’s published decision text.
