The Sensex closed at 71,593.24 on Thursday, October 8, 2026, down 1,045.46 points or 1.44%. Reports from PTI describe that close as a more-than-two-and-a-half-year low, not a three-year low. The fall came a day after the Reserve Bank of India raised its policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its stance toward calibrated tightening, while Brent crude climbed to US$104.50 a barrel. The reports link these events to the sell-off, but none of them measures how much each factor contributed.
The closing levels on October 7 and October 8
The market had already fallen before the October 8 session. The table below separates the two closing levels and the intraday figure reported for October 8. Use closes for day-to-day comparisons, because an intraday level can be above or below where the index finally settles.
| Date (2026) | Measure | Sensex level | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 7 | Close | 72,638.70 | Down 429.11 points | PTI market report |
| October 8 | Intraday low | 71,327.75 | Not stated as a percentage | PTI market report |
| October 8 | Afternoon level | 71,406.79 | Not stated as a percentage | The Week (intraday snapshot, not a closing figure) |
| October 8 | Close | 71,593.24 | Down 1,045.46 points (1.44%) | PTI market report |
The October 8 decline was therefore roughly twice the size of the previous day’s fall in points, and it closed well above the intraday low. The afternoon figure from The Week is useful for seeing the session’s direction, but it should not be quoted as the closing level.

Why the headline says two and a half years, not three
PTI’s market report places the October 8 close as the lowest since roughly two and a half years, noting that the previous close near that level was on February 13, 2024. That is the basis for describing the move as a more-than-two-and-a-half-year low. “Three-year low” is a looser label that the available reporting does not confirm. Without a separate long-run index series showing that exact comparison, the more precise wording is the safer one.

The RBI decision
The Monetary Policy Committee met from October 5 to 7, 2026, under the chairmanship of Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The committee voted unanimously to raise the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. It also changed its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening.
The resolution says the length and size of the tightening cycle depend on several factors:
- actual growth and inflation developments;
- underlying inflation and broadening price pressures;
- second-round effects of the supply shock;
- demand conditions.
PTI summarised the message by saying that rate cuts were off the table in the near term and that the next policy move could only be a hike or a pause. That wording is PTI’s description of the signal. It is not a sentence from the resolution text. PTI attributed a related remark to Governor Malhotra, saying that policy action ahead “can only be a rate hike or a pause, depending on the evolving conditions and the outlook.” For the exact wording, check the RBI’s own published statement.
For investors, the important point is the change in direction. A stance that now leans toward further tightening lowers the odds of cheaper borrowing soon, which weighs on equity valuations, especially for rate-sensitive sectors. The reports do not quantify that effect on the October 8 move.
Crude oil and inflation
PTI reported that Brent crude rose 4.25% to US$104.50 a barrel on October 8. The RBI’s resolution noted volatility in crude prices amid the West Asia conflict, and it said high energy and commodity prices contributed to near-term inflation pressure.
The link between oil and the rate decision runs through inflation. Costlier crude pushes up fuel and transport costs, feeds into prices across the economy, and can widen the trade deficit. Those effects gave the central bank reason to lean toward tightening. The reports do not say how much of the Sensex fall came from crude itself, as opposed to the rate decision or other factors.

Macro figures in the RBI resolution
The resolution contains several economic figures. They describe the wider economy and are not daily market data, so they should not be compared directly with the Sensex closes.

Foreign selling and other pressures
PTI, citing exchange data, reported that foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹6,121.37 crore on October 7. The same report pointed to foreign outflows, elevated global bond yields, and a weaker rupee as pressures on the market. These are reported contributors and investor concerns. The reporting does not establish a cause-and-effect chain from any one of them to the index fall.
What the reports cannot establish
The sources agree on the sequence of events and on the figures listed above. They do not isolate causation. A single trading day cannot show whether the fall reflected the rate decision, crude prices, foreign selling, or a mix of all three. Reports on this kind of move usually describe the drivers investors cited, not a measured breakdown.
Index levels, crude prices, RBI actions, and flow data change quickly. Figures in this article describe the October 8, 2026 session and the RBI decision made at the October 5 to 7 meeting. Later sessions may differ materially.
