Indian equities sold off sharply on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The Sensex closed at 71,593.24, down 1,045.46 points (1.44%), while the Nifty 50 ended at 22,231.80, down 371.25 points (1.64%). The Nifty touched a reported 52-week low of 22,179 during the session. These are historical closing figures, not a live market update.
How the Sensex and Nifty closed
ANI’s report, republished by WebIndia123, put the previous Sensex close at 72,638.70 and the previous Nifty 50 close at 22,603.05. The session’s closing changes and reported low were:
| Index | October 8 close | Change from previous close | Reported session detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | 71,593.24 | Down 1,045.46 points (1.44%) | Previous close: 72,638.70 |
| Nifty 50 | 22,231.80 | Down 371.25 points (1.64%) | Reported 52-week low: 22,179; previous close: 22,603.05 |
The Nifty’s reported low was an intraday level; its closing value was higher. The two indices measure different baskets of listed companies, so their point losses are not directly comparable. The percentage changes offer a more useful comparison of that day’s declines.
How widespread was the selloff?
The losses extended well beyond the two headline benchmarks. The Economic Times reported 2,950 declining shares, 660 advancing shares and 112 unchanged shares on the NSE. It also reported that BSE-listed market capitalization fell by more than ₹10 lakh crore during the session.
#1 Best Overall
- Mid- and small-cap shares: ANI reported the Nifty Midcap 50 down 2.71%. The Economic Times said the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 fell by as much as 3%.
- Sectors: ANI reported the Nifty Metal index down more than 3%. The Economic Times also reported declines of more than 3% for Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty.
Together, the broad market breadth and sector losses indicate that selling was not confined to the Sensex and Nifty constituents. They describe the session’s spread, but do not identify a single cause.
Why did the market fall on October 8?
Contemporary coverage cited several pressures at once. These were reported explanations and market commentary, not a measured breakdown of how much each factor contributed to the decline.

- Foreign investor selling: The Economic Times reported provisional net foreign investor sales of more than ₹6,121 crore on Wednesday, October 7, and nearly ₹57,000 crore over nine consecutive sessions through that Wednesday. Those flow figures were reported as provisional, not independently confirmed here against an exchange filing.
- Oil prices: Reports cited Brent crude above roughly $102–$103 per barrel, with one account placing it around $104. Higher oil prices can raise concern about import costs and inflation in India, but that context alone does not establish how much oil affected this session’s share prices.
- Interest rates and borrowing conditions: ANI’s report said the Reserve Bank of India raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted toward “calibrated tightening.” The specific October policy move is attributable here to contemporary reporting; a matching official RBI statement was not located to verify it independently.
- Global cues: Coverage also pointed to elevated US Treasury yields, concern about possible Federal Reserve tightening and weak global market signals as pressures on sentiment.
- Technical support levels: Reports said selling intensified after technical support levels gave way. That is a description of the market commentary, not proof that technical trading caused the broader decline.
Religare Broking’s Ajit Mishra described the benchmarks as remaining under pressure through most of the day and settling near their lows. The observation helps characterize the session’s trading pattern; it does not establish the relative importance of the reported macroeconomic and flow factors.

The closing percentage changes show the scale of the day’s losses in the two benchmarks. The Nifty’s reported intraday low gives a separate measure of how far it fell during trading; the breadth and sector readings show how widely losses spread. None of these figures, alone or together, proves why prices moved or predicts what happened afterward.

The Sensex and Nifty levels, reported low, sector moves and analyst comments come from ANI’s October 8, 2026 report republished by WebIndia123. The market capitalization, breadth and provisional foreign-flow figures were reported by The Economic Times; its October 8 live blog also summarized the reported trigger list. The report is a retrospective account of that session; it should not be read as describing current market conditions.
