The Sensex closed at 72,638.70 on October 7, 2026, down 429.11 points or 0.59%, after the Reserve Bank of India raised its policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and changed its monetary policy stance from neutral to “calibrated tightening.” Reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI) and India Today described the rate increase itself as broadly expected. Investors reacted more to the change in stance and what it signalled for inflation and future policy.
The session in numbers
Both benchmark indices fell at the close. The table below uses the closing figures reported by PTI and India Today for the October 7, 2026 session.
| Index | Close | Change (points) | Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P BSE Sensex | 72,638.70 | −429.11 | −0.59% |
| Nifty 50 | 22,603.05 | −173.05 | −0.76% |
The Sensex traded as low as 72,468.72 intraday, according to PTI. That figure is a trading low, not the close. Because the Nifty fell by a larger percentage than the Sensex, the broader index was the weaker of the two on a proportional basis, even though the Sensex lost more points.

What the RBI changed
The repo rate
According to PTI and India Today, the Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points, taking it to 5.50%. The repo rate is the rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks, so a higher figure generally pushes up borrowing costs across the banking system over time.
The stance
The policy stance moved from neutral to “calibrated tightening.” A stance describes the direction the central bank expects its policy to take, not a fixed schedule of moves. PTI quoted RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra as saying, while announcing the decision: “Rate cuts are off the table in the near term and policy action ahead can only be a rate hike or a pause, depending on the evolving conditions and the outlook.”
That quotation rules out near-term cuts and frames the next step as either a further hike or a pause. It does not commit the RBI to additional hikes. Some market commentary has described the shift as a “hawkish pivot.” That phrase is a market characterization of the change in tone, not a statement from the central bank.

Why reports separated the rate move from the stance change
Coverage treated the rate increase and the stance shift as two different signals. The 25-basis-point move was largely anticipated, so it was not the main surprise. The change in stance was the element that reset expectations about where rates go next.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, told PTI: “With the RBI delivering the rate hike on expected lines, the domestic market reacted more sharply to the shift in policy stance from neutral to calibrated tightening, which signals a turn in the rate cycle.”

Rishabh Nahar, partner and fund manager at Qode Advisors, gave India Today a view on the equity implications: “For equities, RBI’s rate hike marks a subtle but important shift, the easy valuation tailwind from lower rates is beginning to fade and earnings will increasingly have to justify valuations.”

Both comments are analyst views, not RBI statements. They explain why a widely expected move could still weigh on equities: lower rates had been supporting valuations, and that support is now expected to fade.
Other pressures reported on the day
Coverage linked the session’s caution to several macro conditions at the same time. These were reported alongside the policy decision. The reports did not measure how much each one contributed to the fall, so the list below should be read as context, not as a breakdown of the decline.

Crude oil
PTI reported Brent crude at USD 102 per barrel, up 1.41%. Higher oil prices feed into inflation expectations, which is one reason the reports tied crude to the inflation concern behind the tighter stance.
The rupee and bond yields
India Today reported that the rupee weakened to a five-month low against the US dollar and that bond yields rose after the policy announcement. The reports did not give a closing rupee rate or yield level for the session, so no figure is attached here.
Foreign institutional flows
PTI reported that foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 2,961.30 crore on Tuesday. October 7, 2026 was a Wednesday, so that flow figure refers to the previous trading day as reported, not to the session in which the index fell.

The tape was mixed. Some sectors fell sharply while others rose, and the index level hid a wide spread of individual results. Where the reports did not give a percentage, the cell says so.

PTI also named telecommunications, PSU banks, hospitals and housing finance among the sectoral winners. India Today reported that some banking indices recovered or gained by the close. Bank performance was therefore not uniform, and it would be inaccurate to say banks as a group rose.
What this session does and does not show
- Established by the reports: the closing levels and losses for both indices, the 25-basis-point hike to 5.50%, the shift to calibrated tightening, and the named sector and stock moves listed above.
- Reported but not decomposed: crude prices, the rupee, bond yields and foreign selling were all reported on the same day. None of the sources quantified how much each one drove the decline.
- Not a forecast: the RBI’s statement, as quoted, leaves the next move open to a hike or a pause. Nothing in the session data indicates how markets will trade after this point.
- Not a trading signal: a one-day market explanation is a description of a single session. Treating it as a reliable guide to the next session, or to any position, would go beyond what the reports can support.
For readers following the story, the more useful questions are how bank lending rates respond over the coming months and whether the rupee, bond yields and foreign flows keep moving in the same direction as they did on October 7.
