Yes—the Sensex and Nifty opened higher on Monday, October 5, 2026, ahead of the RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting. Before the opening, GIFT Nifty was up 0.57%, but that pre-market signal was not a promise of gains for the full session or a forecast of the RBI’s decision.
What happened at the October 5 opening?
At 8:22 IST, GIFT Nifty stood at 22,620, up 129 points, or 0.57%. India Today said the indication pointed to a positive start for the Nifty 50 (India Today’s pre-market report).
In its later same-day report, India Today said the Sensex opened at 72,340.95 and the Nifty 50 at 22,532.40. It characterized the move as an attempt to recover after an extended losing streak (India Today’s opening report). These figures confirm a higher opening; they do not establish how either index performed for the rest of the day.
How did the opening compare with the previous close?
The previous trading session cited in Financial Express was September 30. The Sensex closed at 71,909.70, down 570.59 points, or 0.79%; the Nifty closed at 22,421.95, down 198.50 points, or 0.88%. Markets were closed on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti (Financial Express market report).

The higher October 5 opening therefore followed a weak last cited close. India Today also described the market as coming off an eight-week run of weekly losses (India Today’s opening report).
What was known about the RBI MPC meeting?
The RBI’s August 2026 resolution scheduled the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting for October 5–7. At the August meeting, the committee kept the repo rate at 5.25% and retained a neutral policy stance. That is the latest cited decision before the October meeting, not its outcome (RBI resolution reproduced by Track RBI).

Because the meeting was still underway on October 5, the opening alone cannot show how investors would respond to the eventual policy announcement. The cited reports do not establish the October decision or the market’s subsequent reaction.

Which market cues were investors watching?
- Global rate expectations: India Today linked the positive pre-market signal to easing concerns about aggressive US monetary tightening (India Today’s pre-market report).
- Crude oil and global sentiment: The same report cited lower crude prices and improving global sentiment as explanations for the expected positive start (India Today’s pre-market report).
- Other watchpoints: The Times of India’s live coverage listed crude prices, global bond yields, foreign investor activity, macroeconomic releases, and earnings among the factors investors were tracking (The Times of India live coverage).
These were reported explanations and watchpoints, not measured contributions to the opening move. The available figures do not show how much any one factor influenced prices.

The evidence supports a narrow conclusion: GIFT Nifty signaled a positive start at 8:22 IST, and both benchmark indexes subsequently opened higher on October 5. An opening direction is not the same as a full-session gain, a sustained market reversal, or a prediction of the RBI’s policy decision.
