The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 makes a strong case for buyers who want detailed sound and earbuds designed to be serviced rather than discarded. Its headline upgrades include Dolby Atmos with head tracking, Bluetooth 6.0 and user-replaceable batteries for both the earbuds and charging case. But “next-gen in every way” goes too far: TechRadar’s reviewer found its noise cancellation behind category leaders, and high-resolution wireless playback depends on having compatible source hardware.
What is new in the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5?
Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026. The launch announcement said shipping would begin September 3 and listed an MSRP of CAD $449.95. That is the announcement’s Canadian launch price, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability in other regions. Sennheiser’s launch announcement and its US product page describe the new model; the US page’s listing details are not a substitute for checking local stock and price.
| Feature | What Sennheiser says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Driver and wireless audio | 7 mm TrueResponse dynamic driver; Bluetooth 6.0, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless; supported wireless playback up to 24-bit/96 kHz. | Codec and resolution depend on the playback device, software, settings and available content. The headline resolution is not guaranteed with every phone or source. |
| Spatial audio | Dolby Atmos 3D audio with interactive head tracking. | Atmos playback requires compatible content and a supported playback path; an ordinary stereo track does not automatically become an Atmos mix. |
| Noise control | Adaptive hybrid ANC, transparency mode and adaptive anti-wind. | TechRadar’s reviewer found noise cancellation short of the leading competitors. |
| Calls | Six microphones and two bone-conduction voice accelerometers across the pair, plus AI speech extraction; Sennheiser’s support FAQ describes four microphones per earbud, including its voice accelerometer. | These are the manufacturer’s implementation claims, not an independent measurement of call quality. |
| Battery | Up to 12 hours per charge and up to 40 hours with the case; both the earbud cells and case battery are user-replaceable. | Runtime figures are manufacturer claims, not independently established typical-use results. Replacement-part availability varies by country. |
| Protection | IP54 dust, sweat and splash resistance. | IP54 is not a swimming or submersion rating. |
Those specifications make the MTW5 a meaningful refresh, especially for people who value serviceability and spatial-audio features. They do not establish that every aspect of sound, fit, noise reduction or calls is better for every listener.
How does it sound?
Sennheiser builds the MTW5 around a 7 mm TrueResponse dynamic driver and describes its tuning as bass-forward. In its support FAQ, the company characterizes the MTW5 as having a less-forward midrange, cleaner and more controlled bass, and more energy above 12 kHz than the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4. That is Sennheiser’s comparison, not a neutral measurement of how every listener will hear the change. Sennheiser’s setup and product FAQ also explains the supported audio features.
#1 Best Overall
- Signature Sennheiser Sound, Refined: Experience brilliant, emotionally rich audio with a high fidelity audiophile-grade 7mm TrueResponse driver, meticulously tuned to deliver exceptional clarity, detail, and natural balance at any volume.
- Audiophile Grade Wireless Audio: Advanced Bluetooth codecs including aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and AAC preserve every detail, so music, movies, and games sound immersive, dynamic, and true to the source.
- Exceptional Battery Life: Enjoy up to 40 hours of playtime with on-the-go charging from the case. A replaceable battery extends product lifespan, helping reduce electronic waste while delivering years of premium sound.
- Built For Life: The secure-fitting ergonomic design assures superb wearing comfort and uncompromised audio enjoyment in any environment. Dust- and splash-resistant protection (IP54 rating) lets your audio accompany all your adventures.
- Clearer Calls, Smarter Microphones: Digital beamforming microphones, plus a bone conduction mic, and AI voice isolation keep your voice clear and natural on calls, even in busy environments, at home or on the move.
TechRadar’s September 2026 review describes the sound as detailed. Whether the tuning suits you will still come down to preference: bass emphasis, vocal presentation and treble balance are subjective, and the ability to use a higher-bitrate codec does not by itself guarantee a perceptible improvement.
What 24-bit/96 kHz wireless audio requires
Sennheiser says the MTW5 can support up to 24-bit/96 kHz over a compatible wireless path. To use a particular codec, both the earbuds and the playback device must support it, and the relevant settings and source content must allow it. A phone that falls back to a different codec will not deliver that specific pathway simply because the earbuds support it.

Does the noise cancellation compete with the best?
The MTW5 has adaptive hybrid ANC, transparency and adaptive anti-wind according to Sennheiser. The independent caveat is more important if quiet travel is your priority: TechRadar’s reviewer found its ANC behind the category leaders and pointed readers seeking stronger cancellation toward the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen). That is the reviewer’s comparative judgment, not a claim that the MTW5’s ANC is ineffective in every environment. TechRadar’s full MTW5 review includes its testing and comparison.

No independent result in the cited review establishes how much it improves performance in particular conditions, so treat it as a feature to assess in real-world listening rather than a guarantee of wind-free calls or playback.

Are the batteries really replaceable?
Yes. Sennheiser says users can replace both the individual earbud batteries and the charging-case battery, a notable distinction from many sealed true-wireless designs. Its support FAQ names BA 501 for the two earbud batteries and BA 502 for the case battery, and identifies a Phillips PH000 screwdriver for the replacement process. The FAQ says the batteries are available in the EU and selected countries; it does not establish broad global availability or a universal price.
The box contents listed on Sennheiser’s US product page include a battery replacement tool, USB-C cable, XS/S/M/L ear tips, charging case, earbuds and documentation. Check the listing for your region before assuming the same contents apply there. Replaceable cells can extend the useful life of the product, but the cited sources do not promise a particular lifespan or establish a battery-replacement cost.

TechRadar reports that Sennheiser product manager Frank Foppe estimated battery capacity would remain at 80–90% after 500 charge cycles. That is an attributed estimate from an interview, not a TechRadar lab result or a guaranteed outcome for every battery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat changed in fit and calls?
Sennheiser says the MTW5 has a revised, lower fit and updated ear tips. Its launch material reports that 73% of testers found the fin-less shape more comfortable than the previous generation, but the release does not supply the sample size or methodology. Individual ears vary, so that manufacturer-reported result cannot predict whether these earbuds will stay secure or feel comfortable for you.

For calls, Sennheiser describes six microphones and two bone-conduction voice accelerometers across the pair, combined with AI speech extraction. This is an expanded voice-capture system according to the company, not independent proof of a particular call result. If fit or microphone performance is decisive, try the earbuds or look for hands-on assessments in conditions like the calls you make.
How does it compare with alternatives?
| Option | Consider it if… | Evidence-based trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 | You value detailed sound, replaceable batteries or the new Dolby Atmos head-tracking feature. | TechRadar found ANC behind class leaders. Sennheiser’s stated launch MSRP was CAD $449.95; compare current local prices rather than treating that dated regional launch figure as today’s price. |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 | You want the previous generation and can find it at a discount. | TechRadar says the discounted MTW4 could be attractive. The cited sources do not establish a current price or a like-for-like value at your retailer. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) | Your first priority is stronger noise cancellation. | TechRadar recommends considering Bose for ANC priority; that does not establish that Bose is better for sound preferences, battery serviceability or every other feature. |
| Technics EAH-AZ100 | You are comparing other premium earbuds in this category. | TechRadar discusses this model as an alternative, but the cited material does not establish a specific advantage for it on the priorities covered here. |
Prices and stock change by region and retailer. TechRadar’s page showed a $299.95 comparison price when accessed, but that is a dynamic listing rather than a verified universal price or MSRP. Compare the offers available where you live, particularly if the MTW4 discount changes the value calculation.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5?
- Consider them if you want Sennheiser’s detailed, bass-forward sound, have a compatible source for the codecs you care about, or place unusual value on replaceable batteries.
- Look elsewhere first if maximum ANC is your main requirement; TechRadar’s review puts the MTW5 behind category leaders for noise cancellation.
- Compare the MTW4 if it is substantially cheaper locally and you do not need the MTW5’s newer features.
- Check compatibility before paying extra for aptX or high-resolution playback, and try the fit if ear shape or call quality is a deciding factor.
