There is no universal winner. Semrush is usually the better choice for an all-in-one workflow covering SEO, competitor research, reporting and AI-search visibility. Ahrefs is the stronger fit when backlink, content, keyword and technical-audit depth matter most. Moz belongs on the shortlist, but its current plans and limits should be verified directly before you make a three-way price or capability decision.
Semrush, Ahrefs or Moz: the short answer
Choose the platform that matches the work you do every week rather than the one with the highest headline score.
| Tool | Best fit | Why it stands out | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | Teams that want broad marketing visibility in one subscription | Combines keyword and competitor research, position tracking, site audits, reporting and AI-visibility monitoring | Costs rise quickly as projects, keywords, history, users and API requirements increase |
| Ahrefs | Link-led SEO, content research and technical investigation | Strong Site Explorer, Content Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker and Site Audit workflows | Paid plans are expensive for occasional users, and limits change substantially by tier |
| Moz | Only after you confirm its current plan details meet your needs | It remains a relevant product to evaluate, but current official pricing and limits are not established here | Do not rely on an old Moz comparison, price or feature claim |
What Semrush is best at
Semrush is the broadest fit when SEO is part of a larger visibility program. Its current SEO and AI-search plans list keyword research, competitor analysis, position tracking, Site Audit, website monitoring and AI-visibility tracking. Higher tiers add capabilities such as historical data, expanded website and keyword limits, share-of-voice views and API access.

Semrush strengths
- A single workflow can move from competitor discovery to keyword targeting, rank monitoring, technical checks and client reporting.
- AI-search visibility is included in the product direction rather than treated as a separate research project.
- Higher plans are designed for organizations that need more history, larger limits, collaboration and API access.
Semrush trade-offs
- The entry price is only part of the budget: additional projects, tracked terms, users, historical views and add-ons can make the total substantially higher.
- A backlink-focused solo consultant may pay for modules and breadth that are not central to daily work.
- Plan names and entitlements matter; do not assume a feature shown on the pricing page is included at every level.
What Ahrefs is best at
Ahrefs is the more natural starting point for teams whose core questions are “Who links to this site?”, “Which content earns visibility?” and “What technical or keyword opportunities should we investigate next?” Ahrefs lists Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Content Explorer, historical data, API/MCP access and Brand Radar capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
Ahrefs strengths
- Backlink investigation and link-prospect research are central to the product experience.
- Content Explorer supports topic and competitor-content analysis alongside keyword research.
- Site Audit, Rank Tracker and historical views connect technical findings with ongoing performance monitoring.
- API and MCP options on eligible plans support larger reporting or automation workflows.
Ahrefs trade-offs
- Plans are costly if you only need occasional keyword checks or a small number of audits.
- Project, crawl-credit, tracked-keyword, export and historical-data allowances vary sharply by plan.
- Advanced functionality may require moving up a tier even when the basic product already fits your workflow.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about Moz
Moz should remain in a serious shortlist, but a current value judgment requires a direct check of Moz’s official pricing and feature pages. The available information does not establish current Moz prices, usage limits or a feature advantage over Semrush or Ahrefs. Treat any older table that supplies those figures as potentially stale.
Before selecting Moz, confirm the exact plan’s tracked-keyword allowance, campaign or website count, crawl limits, rank-update schedule, historical access, reporting and export rules, user seats and API availability. Without those answers, a “best” or “cheapest” verdict would be speculation.

How to choose for your situation
Small business with one or a few sites
Start with the smallest plan that covers your tracked keywords, locations, crawl volume and reporting needs. Semrush is attractive if competitor monitoring, reporting and AI visibility are part of the same job. Ahrefs is the better fit when the budget is going primarily toward links, content opportunities and technical investigation. Do not pay for enterprise history or API access you will not use.
Rank #3
Freelancer or consultant
Estimate the number of client websites, users, exports and tracked terms you will manage simultaneously. Ahrefs can be compelling for link- and content-heavy consulting; Semrush can reduce tool switching when clients also expect competitor, visibility and reporting work. Calculate the cost at your actual client volume rather than at a single-site level.
Agency or in-house team
Prioritize project capacity, user seats, scheduled reporting, historical access, export rules, rank-tracking frequency and API requirements. Semrush’s broader visibility bundle may simplify a mixed marketing stack. Ahrefs may justify its cost when analysts spend most of their time in backlink, content and technical workflows.
AI-search monitoring as a requirement
Semrush explicitly positions AI-visibility tracking in its SEO and AI-search plans. Ahrefs lists Brand Radar. Compare the prompts, locations, refresh rate, competitors and export limits included in the exact plans you are considering; a feature name alone does not establish equivalent coverage.

Limits to compare before subscribing
Ask each vendor for the numbers that determine whether a plan remains usable after the first month:
Best Value
- Tracked-keyword volume, search locations and desktop/mobile coverage
- Number of projects, campaigns or websites
- Site-audit crawl credits, page limits, scheduling and alerting
- Backlink, keyword and content-result depth
- Historical-data range and which reports retain it
- Rank-tracking update frequency
- Export rows, report branding and scheduled-report limits
- User seats, permissions and collaboration controls
- API or MCP availability, quotas and overage rules
- AI-visibility prompts, competitors, geography and refresh limits
What published index figures do—and do not—prove
An Ahrefs comparison supplied in July 2026 cited 28.7 billion keywords for Ahrefs versus 26.7 billion for Semrush. The same comparison cited 448 million monthly AI prompts for Ahrefs versus 239 million for Semrush. It also listed AhrefsBot first, SemrushBotBacklinks second and Moz dotbot third in an SEO-bot traffic ranking attributed to Cloudflare Radar.
These are vendor-presented comparison figures, not a neutral test of accuracy, freshness, ranking quality or value. Index size and crawler traffic can inform a shortlist, but they should not replace checks of the countries, databases, limits and workflows your team actually uses.
A practical decision process
- Write down your recurring jobs. Separate backlink research, content discovery, technical auditing, rank monitoring, reporting and AI-visibility work.
- Count your real workload. Record websites, users, tracked terms, locations, crawl pages, report recipients and exports for a typical month.
- Match those counts to plan limits. Include history, update frequency, API/MCP access and overage rules, not just the advertised starting price.
- Choose the narrowest platform that covers the workflow. Pick Semrush for breadth, Ahrefs for link/content/technical depth, or Moz only after its current terms are confirmed.
For most mixed marketing teams, Semrush is the safer all-in-one recommendation. For specialists who measure success through links, content opportunities and deep SEO investigation, Ahrefs is the stronger default. Moz can still be evaluated, but its current plans must be verified before it can be ranked fairly against the other two.
