Sell it if you need the gold now; keep it if collection value matters more, or put it in a fish pond if you want roe over time. In versions 1.6.9 and later, legendary fish can go in ponds, one fish per pond. The Legend is not used in any quests, so quest requirements are not a reason to hold that fish.
What you gain by selling
Selling turns the catch into immediate in-game gold. The Stardew Valley Wiki lists the Legend at 5,000g at standard value; its listed sale value reaches 10,000g at iridium quality and 15,000g at iridium quality with the Angler profession. These are in-game values, not real-world prices; the retrieved reference does not state a publication year for them. See the Legend reference and fish value table.
The other four original legendary fish have lower standard-quality values in that table:

What you give up by selling
The original legendary fish are normally limited to one catch per save file, or once per player in multiplayer. That makes selling a meaningful choice if you care about keeping a complete collection or displaying the fish. However, “one catch” is not an absolute rule in every circumstance: the Fish reference notes that Challenge Bait can produce up to three of one legendary fish at once, and that panning with a Fisher enchantment can also enable multiple catches.
If you value the fish as a rare collectible, keep it. The value of that keepsake is personal, and selling does not convert it into anything beyond the gold payout.

Consider a fish pond if you want both retention and output
Since version 1.6.9, legendary fish can be placed in fish ponds. The official Stardew Valley 1.6.9 changelog says: “You can now put legendary fish in fish ponds. These are limited to one per pond and produce legendary fish roe. Each fish has a unique water color.” This lets you retain the fish while the pond produces roe over time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The feature is therefore version-sensitive, and the available sources do not establish a universal long-term profit comparison against selling. Treat a pond as an alternative for ongoing roe and keeping the fish, not as a guaranteed better investment. See the Fish Pond reference for pond details.

Does the Legend have a quest use?
The Legend’s reference page explicitly says it is not used in any quests. That is a fish-specific fact; it should not be generalized to every collectible or every quest in Stardew Valley. If your only concern is whether this fish is needed for a quest, the source gives no reason to keep the Legend for that purpose.

Choose based on your priority
- Sell: choose this when immediate gold is more useful than retaining the catch.
- Keep: choose this when collection, display, or personal attachment matters more than the sale value.
- Use a pond: choose this when you want to retain the fish and receive roe over time, and have a pond slot to devote to it.
