To put a self-hosted web application firewall (WAF) in front of an API, route client HTTP traffic through the WAF before it reaches the API service. The WAF engine inspects requests—and, depending on its configuration and placement, responses—against rules. ModSecurity is one such engine; the OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS) supplies a separate set of generic attack-detection rules for compatible engines, including ModSecurity and Coraza. A WAF adds a filtering layer, but it does not replace API authentication, authorization, or other application-level controls.
How does a WAF sit in front of an API?
The simplest model is a traffic path: client → WAF → API service. The WAF acts as a proxy, examining HTTP traffic against configured rules before forwarding it. OWASP also describes deploying ModSecurity within a web server rather than as a separate proxy. In either arrangement, the inspection engine needs to be in the actual request path. If clients can reach the API through another route that bypasses a separately deployed WAF, that traffic will not be inspected by it.
OWASP’s ModSecurity WAF documentation describes both proxy and in-server placements and notes that protection depends on configuration. The right deployment therefore depends on the web server, proxy, gateway, and platform already in use; the available evidence does not establish one placement as best for every API stack.

ModSecurity is the inspection engine
ModSecurity processes HTTP traffic and applies configured rules. OWASP describes it as a WAF that can run as a proxy in front of a web application or within a web server. Its project information also discusses pairing it with CRS. See the OWASP ModSecurity project.

CRS is a separate ruleset
The OWASP CRS provides generic rules for detecting common web attack patterns, including SQL injection and cross-site scripting. It is not the WAF engine itself: it is a ruleset designed for compatible engines. OWASP lists both ModSecurity and Coraza as compatible options. CRS aims to reduce false alerts, but that aim does not guarantee that a particular API’s traffic will be classified correctly without configuration and operational monitoring. See the OWASP CRS documentation.
When choosing an engine, verify its current support for your specific server or proxy, deployment method, and API traffic. Then confirm that the ruleset you intend to use is supported and maintained for that engine. The cited sources do not provide a complete current compatibility matrix or platform-specific setup instructions.

What should you verify before deployment?
- Traffic routing: Confirm that client requests to the API actually pass through the WAF in the intended production path.
- Integration support: Check current official documentation for the exact web server, proxy, gateway, and deployment platform you operate.
- Inspection needs: Confirm that the engine can inspect the request and, where required, response traffic in your chosen placement.
- Ruleset fit: Verify that CRS or another maintained ruleset works with the engine and suits your API’s traffic.
- Operations: Plan how to configure rules, monitor alerts, investigate false positives, and adjust policy without silently weakening protection.
- Performance and failure behavior: Measure the effect under your API’s real traffic and decide how the service should behave if the WAF is unavailable. No comparative benchmark or universal failure-mode recommendation is established by the cited sources.
- API-level coverage: Treat filtering as one layer, and separately verify that application controls address API-specific risks.
Does a WAF protect against broken API authorization?
Not by itself. A WAF can filter HTTP requests that match configured patterns, but API security includes risks that require controls in the API’s authentication, authorization, business logic, and operations. OWASP’s API Security Top 10 (2023) names ten risk categories:
- Broken object-level authorization
- Broken authentication
- Broken object property-level authorization
- Unrestricted resource consumption
- Broken function-level authorization
- Unrestricted access to sensitive business flows
- Server-side request forgery (SSRF)
- Security misconfiguration
- Improper inventory management
- Unsafe consumption of APIs
These categories are broader than generic HTTP attack filtering. For example, whether a signed-in user is permitted to access a particular object or invoke a particular function must be enforced by the API’s own authorization logic. The OWASP API Security Project covers this distinct API-security scope. Keep API-specific controls and testing in place even when a WAF is deployed.

How should you decide whether self-hosting fits?
A self-hosted WAF gives your team responsibility for selecting a compatible engine and rules, placing them correctly, and operating the resulting layer. The sources support ModSecurity and Coraza as CRS-compatible engines, but do not establish a universally best option or provide comparative performance results. Make the decision against your actual stack and operational capacity: verify compatibility in current official product documentation, validate the rules against representative API traffic, and measure performance and failure behavior in your own environment. Do not assume that a ruleset’s general attack coverage will address API authorization or business-flow weaknesses.
