The six levels of driving automation run from Level 0, where the human does the driving, to Level 5, where a system is designed to drive in all conditions a human can. The key distinction is not how advanced a vehicle sounds: it is which parts of driving the active feature handles, who monitors the road, and who must take over if the system cannot continue.
SAE International’s J3016 framework labels these levels. Levels 0–2 are driver-support features that require the human to monitor the driving environment. At Levels 3–5, the system performs the complete driving task within its design conditions. The framework classifies roles and operating limits; it is not a safety rating or a score for a whole vehicle. SAE J3016
What are the six levels of autonomy?
SAE calls them levels of driving automation. The table summarizes what the feature does and the human role at each level.
| Level | SAE label | What the feature does | Human role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | No Driving Automation | May warn the driver or intervene momentarily in a hazard, but does not continuously perform part of the driving task. | Drives and remains engaged. |
| 1 | Driver Assistance | Continuously supports either steering or acceleration and braking. | Supervises the feature and handles the rest of the driving task. |
| 2 | Partial Driving Automation | Continuously supports both steering and acceleration and braking. | Monitors the driving environment and remains responsible. |
| 3 | Conditional Driving Automation | Performs the driving task under defined conditions. | Must be available as a fallback when requested or when the system cannot continue. |
| 4 | High Driving Automation | Performs the driving task under defined conditions. | Within those conditions, the system can manage fallback without a human driver. |
| 5 | Full Driving Automation | Is designed to drive under all conditions in which a human can drive. | Human driving is not needed. |
What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3?
At Level 2, the feature can continuously control steering and speed together, but the human must keep watching the road and remains responsible for driving. At Level 3, the system performs the complete driving task within its defined conditions; a human fallback is expected when the system asks for help or cannot continue. That change in monitoring and fallback responsibility—not simply adding another automated control—is the critical distinction. NHTSA’s driver-assistance guidance describes Level 2 drivers as fully engaged and attentive, while SAE J3016 distinguishes driver-support from automated-driving features.
What does Level 4 autonomy mean?
Level 4 means the system performs the driving task and can manage fallback itself, but only within its defined operating conditions. Those conditions may restrict where or in what circumstances it can drive. Outside them, the feature is not operating as a Level 4 system. This is why “high automation” does not mean it can drive everywhere or in every situation. Transport Canada’s framework explains the distinction between bounded operating conditions and Level 5’s broader scope.
Can a Level 3 car drive itself?
Only within the conditions for which its Level 3 feature is designed, and only while that feature is engaged. The system performs the driving task in those conditions, but a human fallback is expected if the system requests a takeover or cannot continue. A Level 3 label therefore does not mean the person can ignore the system’s instructions or assume it will manage every situation.
Is Level 5 self-driving available?
Level 5 is the framework’s definition for a system designed to drive under all conditions in which a human can drive. That definition should not be confused with a claim about current product availability. Availability changes over time and differs by jurisdiction; the cited NHTSA consumer page says Levels 3–5 technologies are not available on vehicles for consumer purchase, but that status can change. Check current manufacturer documentation and local rules before relying on a feature’s capabilities.

SAE levels apply to a driving automation feature in a particular instance, not necessarily to a vehicle as a permanent grade. One vehicle can include several features with different roles. When describing a system, name the feature that is engaged and its operating conditions rather than calling the entire vehicle “Level 2” or “self-driving.” SAE J3016

- Product size: 6.69*2.36*1.97 inches Weight: 0.7 pounds Outer packaging: exquisite color translucent packaging box
- Material: Die-cast car model, made of zinc alloy, with plastic parts, rubber tires, detailed interior and exterior decoration.
- Function: Press the two wheels of the front car to trigger the sound of the engine and the lights, with upright car logos, the angel logo is stored in the hood. The details of the body interior are realistic. Place the car on a flat ground, press the body and pull it back, the car will drive forward. (With pull back function)
- This Rolls-Royce Phantom 1/32 car model pull back car is very suitable for children to play with. The paint is exquisite and feels good, and it is heavy to hold. It is also very suitable for car model enthusiasts as a decoration.
- Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
Marketing terms alone do not establish who is responsible for monitoring or taking over. NHTSA cautions that “self-driving” can give consumers a false impression about how they need to interact with vehicles; consult the owner’s manual for the specific feature’s duties and limits. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do warnings or emergency braking count as automation?
Not necessarily. The SAE taxonomy covers systems that perform part or all of the dynamic driving task on a sustained basis. A warning or momentary intervention—such as automatic emergency braking—does not by itself make a vehicle Level 1 or higher. Crash-avoidance functions can also be part of a Level 3–5 automated-driving system; the classification depends on the sustained driving role, not the presence of a single safety intervention. How to compare two driving automation features
Use the responsibilities and limits behind the level, rather than relying on a product name or a single autonomy label. Compare:

- Who must continuously monitor the roadway.

- The conditions and locations in which the feature operates.
- Whether the level describes a particular engaged feature or is being applied too broadly to the vehicle.
The framework describes roles and operating conditions. It does not, by itself, establish that a higher-level system is safer or better than a lower-level one.
