Transient electronics are designed to stop functioning and degrade after they have served their purpose. A 2017 report described circuits whose polymer substrate breaks down in water vapor, but it did not establish a five-second countdown, a precise lifetime, or a product available to buy.
What “self-destructing” electronics means
Transient electronics are devices made to lose function and then break down under a chosen condition. The phrase “This tape will self-destruct in five seconds” is a pop-culture shorthand, not a description of the timing demonstrated in the 2017 report. The reported work concerns electronic materials deposited on a substrate that reacts with moisture in the air.
How the 2017 moisture-driven circuits work
According to contemporaneous reporting on the 2017 study, Cunjiang Yu of the University of Houston and colleagues in China deposited copper, magnesium oxide, and indium gallium zinc oxide semiconductor materials onto a polyanhydride substrate.
Water vapor hydrolyzes anhydride groups in the polymer, causing the film to decompose. The carboxylic acid produced during that reaction can also break down electronic materials. The researchers reportedly made transient resistors, capacitors, transistors, and other components.

This Montessori learning toy is good for curious kids, turning your own new ideas and inventions into reality. Also perfect for Children's school science STEM engineering projects, Ideal back to school gift for curious minds
- WIDE APPLICATIONS: The circuit motor kit can well catch kids attention and let the them try to build, experiment and explore basic electrical simple circuits. It can also be used in school in science, STEM, technology and design courses, easy to meet your project needs, properly educating some circuit knowledge would be a good interaction time with your kids together
- NOTICE: It is recommended that the voltage be 1.5V-3V. If the voltage is 3V, please control the time. The use time should not be too long, and the time should be controlled within 3 minutes. After 5-10 minutes, the circuit will generate heat and a short circuit.
- WARNING: Suitable for 8+ years. CHOKING HAZARD—Small parts, not for children under 3 years. Be careful of scald caused by short circuit. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable batteries, the kids must use under the supervision of adults
The accessible report does not establish a specific lifetime or experimental timing for this moisture-driven device. The Mission: Impossible comparison should not be read as evidence of a five-second lifespan.
How other transient-circuit approaches differ
Transient electronics research has used different triggers and breakdown mechanisms. These examples are separate systems, not features of the 2017 moisture-driven circuits.

| Reported system | Trigger and mechanism | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 polyanhydride circuits | Ambient water vapor hydrolyzes the substrate; resulting acid can also break down electronic materials. | Reported component demonstrations, including resistors, capacitors, and transistors. No specific lifetime is established in the accessible report. |
| 2015 University of Illinois circuits | Heat releases weak acid from wax, which dissolves magnesium circuits. An RF receiver and inductive heating coil enabled remote activation. | The University of Illinois News Bureau reported a tunable degradation interval of 20 seconds to a couple of minutes after heat was applied. This timing belongs to this heat-triggered project, not the 2017 circuits. Read the university report. |

What the research does—and does not—show
The reports describe experimental material systems, not a commercially available device or a clinically deployed technology. The 2017 reporting supports the claim that researchers made multiple types of transient electronic components; it does not provide a verified decay time. The 2021 abstract’s in vivo toxicity testing is evidence of animal testing only, not proof of general safety in people.

White, an aerospace engineering professor at the University of Illinois, described the separate heat-triggered work this way: “We have demonstrated electronics that are there when you need them and gone when you don’t need them anymore.” That quote refers to the 2015 project, not the moisture-driven system.
