Seiya Suzuki has not said whether he will return to the Chicago Cubs. After the team’s postseason elimination, the pending free agent said his family loves Chicago but that he was unsure what free agency would bring. His comments leave his next team—and any possible agreement with the Cubs—undecided.
What Suzuki said after the Cubs’ season ended
In post-season comments reproduced by theScore and attributed to The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney, Suzuki said: “My family, they love Chicago,” the pending free agent said, according to The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney. “But with free agency, that’s something new for me. There’s a lot of processes involved with that, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen.” (theScore)
He also reflected on his time in Chicago: “Just looking back on the five years, I don’t know if I was able to reach the expectations that people had. Each year, there was frustration at the end of the year,” Suzuki said. (theScore)
The remarks convey uncertainty, not a decision to leave. They do not establish that the Cubs will stop pursuing him, that another club has made an offer, or that a new contract is close.

Does Suzuki want to stay in Chicago?
Before the 2026 season, as he entered the final year of his deal, Suzuki said he wanted to stay if he performed well, while acknowledging he had not yet posted the numbers people expected. Sports Illustrated reported him saying: “I’m not sure,” Suzuki said about his future in Chicago. “It depends on my performance. If I perform well, I want to stay. I feel like I still haven’t put up the numbers that people are expecting me to. It comes down to how I perform.” (Sports Illustrated)
That February answer was conditional and came before the season. It should not be treated as a firm commitment or merged with his later post-season comments: after the season, he emphasized that free agency was new to him and that he did not know what would happen.
