Segway-Ninebot ended production of its famous two-wheeled Segway PT on July 15, 2020. The decision ended that model, not the Segway brand or the company’s other mobility products, including stand-up electric kick scooters.
Which Segway scooter was discontinued?
The discontinued product was the Segway PT: the original, iconic personal transporter with two parallel wheels that balances as the rider stands on its platform. It is distinct from stand-up kick scooters that also carry the Segway name. A 2022 market report hosted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission describes the traditional PT as a self-balancing vehicle marketed in 2001 and records its production ending in July 2020 (CPSC-hosted market report).
When did Segway stop making the PT?
Segway-Ninebot announced in June 2020 that it would stop manufacturing the PT on July 15, 2020. The company’s announcement, reported by The Washington Post, and the later CPSC-hosted report both place the end of production in July 2020.

Why was the original Segway discontinued?
Segway president Judy Cai attributed the decision to economics. The PT accounted for 1.5% of Segway-Ninebot’s revenue in 2019, a company revenue share—not a market share or a count of vehicles sold—according to Cai as reported by The Washington Post.

The product had durable niche uses, including city tours and work in malls, airport security, and some law-enforcement settings. The Washington Post also placed its decline in the wider shift toward shared micromobility, bicycles, and conventional scooters; that context should not be mistaken for the company’s sole stated reason.
Fast Company reported that about 140,000 PT vehicles had been sold over the product’s lifetime. That figure is actual lifetime sales as reported in 2020; it is separate from the company’s original plan to sell as many as 100,000 vehicles in its first 13 months. In the same interview, Cai pointed to durability as a business challenge, saying, “We tried analyzing, how come sales cannot go up quickly? One reason, I hate to say, is the quality of it, how durable it is,” (Fast Company).

The PT also asked something of first-time riders: learning to balance. Segway vice president of global business development Tony Ho told Fast Company, “Some people like it . . . but we still have people the first time they get on a Segway PT they have to learn to balance,”

No. The production decision concerned the PT, not the whole company or every product called a Segway. Segway and Ninebot completed a strategic combination in April 2015, and official company materials continue to list self-balancing scooters and kick scooters among its product types (Segway-Ninebot brand story). So “Segway stopped making the PT” is accurate; “Segway stopped making scooters” or “Segway shut down” is not supported.

Cai acknowledged the response from owners when the decision was announced: “Given our decades-long history, we recognize that this decision may come as a disappointment to our strong and loyal following among private owners, who view the Segway as one of the more innovative creations of the early 21st century,”

Availability and compatibility need to be checked for the exact PT model and part. The CPSC-hosted market report mentions replacement batteries for self-balancing scooters generally, but it does not establish current availability, PT-specific fitment, or present-day official service terms. Check any seller’s compatibility details and confirm the model before ordering.
