Segway announced that production of its Personal Transporter (PT) at its Bedford, New Hampshire, facility would end on July 15, 2020. The decision applied to that production line and several related products—not to the Segway brand or every Segway product. The PT’s production and service arrangements varied by region.
What Segway stopped making
The July 15, 2020, date marked the end of PT production at Segway’s Bedford facility, which had made PTs for the U.S. and European markets since 2002, according to Segway New Zealand’s account at the time. Reuters also reported that production of the SE-3 Patroller and Segway Robotics Mobility Platform would end as part of the move.
Segway New Zealand described a different arrangement for its region: the company had sourced PTs from a China production line since 2018 and said in June 2020 that it would continue doing so. That historical account means the Bedford announcement should not be read as proof that PT production stopped everywhere at once.

Contemporary coverage attributed the decision to economics and the PT’s relatively small contribution to company revenue, as Segway shifted attention toward newer products. Segway President Judy Cai put the PT at 1.5% of company revenue in the prior year, according to The Washington Post. Reuters described the share as less than 1.5%; the outlets reported the figure with different precision.

Cai said the pandemic had affected sales and production but was not the deciding factor. The Washington Post quoted her: “This decision was not made lightly, and while the current global pandemic did impact sales and production, it was not a deciding factor in our decision.”
Reuters reported that the changes involved 21 job cuts. That figure concerns the workforce impact reported at the time, not the number of PT owners or products affected.

What the production end meant for PT owners
Ending production did not itself mean that existing PTs immediately lost all support. Segway New Zealand said in June 2020 that Bedford would continue providing parts and service for its installed base, and that Munich would handle EU service. Those were plans reported at the time, not confirmation of current stock or service availability.
Segway’s current general support site provides repair and spare-parts resources, but it does not establish that a specific part is available for a particular PT model. Before arranging service or buying a Segway PT replacement battery, verify the exact model and battery configuration, your regional availability, the seller or provider’s expertise, and applicable service or warranty terms. A listing or general support page alone does not confirm compatibility or authorized coverage.

Segway New Zealand estimated that approximately 140,000 PT units had been produced since 2002. That was an approximate figure in its 2020 account, not a current fleet count.
