An experimental seed-oil-derived polyesteramide retained its mechanical performance after a daylong water exposure, while a year of testing in seawater and other conditions produced at least a 37% drop in its number-average molecular weight. Researchers estimate full hydrolysis could take years—but that is not a measured time for a finished object to disappear, nor proof that it will biodegrade completely in the open ocean.
What the seed-oil polymer is—and what was tested
The material is a polyesteramide (PEA) made by a University of Florida research team, not a general category of seed-oil plastic or a product currently established as commercially available. The researchers combined N,N’-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)brassylamide (BHEBA) with aliphatic diacids to make the polymers. The reported BHEBA precursor is prepared from ethanolamine and brassylic acid.
Brassylic acid is a C13 oxidation product of the C22 fatty acid erucic acid. The 2025 paper says erucic acid accounts for 42% of the fatty acids in non-GMO Ethiopian mustard seed oil (Brassica carinata). That identifies a plant-oil feedstock for part of the material’s chemistry; it does not mean the finished polymer is simply oil or that every seed-oil-based plastic behaves alike. The paper reports the synthesis and test results.

In the tested brassylic-acid-containing formulations, the researchers reported that mechanical performance was not compromised after a daylong water exposure. Their explanation is that brassylic acid adds long methylene sequences that increase hydrophobicity relative to shorter diacids, helping the polymer maintain performance during short-term contact with water. Chemistry World reported the rain comparison and the researchers’ interpretation in 2025: its account of the study.

This is a limited finding about a day of water exposure in the tested material. It is not a field test of rain, repeated wet-dry cycles, sunlight, or the outdoor service life of a manufactured object. Water tolerance over a short period and eventual degradation are not contradictory: the first concerns retained mechanical performance, while the latter concerns chemical change over a much longer period.
What “degrade within years” means here
During a 12-month study, the PEAs lost at least 37% of their number-average molecular weight (Mn) under each of the reported conditions: pH 2, pH 5, seawater, and deionized water. Mn describes the average molecular mass of the polymer chains. A decline indicates hydrolytic chain breakdown; it does not by itself show that an object has lost the same percentage of its mass, broken into small pieces, or been consumed by microorganisms.

Chemistry World says the researchers estimated that full hydrolysis would take years. That is an estimate, not a measured time to complete disappearance. The cited findings do not establish complete marine biodegradation or mineralization—the conversion of polymer carbon into products such as carbon dioxide, water, and biomass—in open-ocean conditions.

Marine fate depends on the polymer and the exposure conditions. Two other studies illustrate why a result for this PEA should not be treated as a prediction for all bioplastics or all seas:

- A 2026 study using seawater from 12 Japanese coastal sites reported BOD-based mineralization of 52–86% for PHBV across those samples. PBSA showed mass loss at only one site and no measurable mineralization. These are results for different polymers, not the seed-oil-based PEA. The study is published in Polymer Degradation and Stability.
- A 2022 one-year in-situ study in the brackish Baltic Sea found no signs of degradation for PLA, while PHB/HV, plasticized starch, and cellulose acetate degraded completely or almost completely. The outcomes varied by material. The authors’ study discusses those differences and the need to choose materials carefully where marine litter is a risk.
These studies use different materials, locations, and measurements, so their percentages cannot be used to rank the polymers against one another. A meaningful comparison needs to align the exposure environment and distinguish short-term mechanical retention, molecular-weight change, mass loss or disintegration, and biological mineralization.

The 2025 paper reports purified yields of 77–88%, molecular weights of 7,000–10,700 Da, and melting temperatures of 130–139 °C for the synthesized PEAs. These are properties of the experimental formulations, not a specification for a finished consumer product. The authors also note that further improvements to mechanical properties would be desirable.

What the evidence does—and does not—support
- Supported: the tested brassylic-acid-containing PEA retained mechanical performance after a daylong water exposure, and its molecular weight fell by at least 37% after 12 months in the reported test conditions.
- Qualified: full hydrolysis on a years timescale is a researcher estimate reported by Chemistry World, not a measured end-of-life date for a product.
- Not established: that a finished object will completely biodegrade, mineralize, or disappear within a known period in the open sea, or that the experimental material is commercially available.
