If you can qualify for an unsecured card with reasonable terms, it avoids tying up cash in a deposit. If you cannot qualify, a secured card may offer a practical way to build or rebuild credit history—provided its issuer reports account activity and you can afford the deposit. Neither type guarantees a particular score increase; your payment habits and the issuer’s reporting practices matter more than the card label.
How secured and unsecured cards differ
A secured card requires a cash deposit that typically supports the credit line. The deposit is collateral for the issuer; it is not a payment toward your monthly bill. You still need to pay each statement as agreed. An unsecured card does not require that collateral.
With a secured card, the deposit ties up money that you may need for other expenses, and the initial credit limit may be small. Some issuers may review an account after a history of on-time payments and consider a higher limit or returning the deposit, but policies and criteria differ. Do not assume that a card will graduate to unsecured or that the deposit will be returned on a particular schedule.

| Your situation | Option to consider | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot qualify for a regular unsecured card | A secured card may be an alternative | Whether you can afford the deposit, the card’s fees and APR, and whether the issuer reports account activity to the credit reporting companies relevant to you. |
| You qualify for an unsecured card with reasonable terms | An unsecured card avoids a security deposit | Compare its fees, APR, reporting practices, credit limit, and repayment fit with other offers. |
| You do not want or cannot obtain a card | A credit-builder loan may be another option | Check whether its payments are reported and whether the payment amount fits your budget. |
Approval is not assured for either card type: issuers set their own eligibility criteria. Before applying, compare the actual offer and account agreement rather than relying on a card’s secured or unsecured label alone.

What to check before applying
- Deposit and access to cash: Confirm the required deposit and understand when and under what conditions the issuer may return it. There is no universal deposit amount or return timeline.
- Fees and interest: Review the current pricing disclosure for annual and other fees, purchase APR, penalty terms, and other account costs. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) cautions that secured cards can carry high fees and rates. CFPB guidance on secured cards.
- Credit reporting: Ask which credit reporting companies receive account information and confirm that payment history is reported. Reported payments can contribute to a credit history; a card that does not report activity may not serve that purpose. CFPB guidance on starting or rebuilding credit history.
- Deposit return or account review: If the issuer offers reviews for a higher limit or an unsecured account, check the review criteria and how a deposit is returned. No universal graduation policy applies.
- Repayment fit: Choose a limit and due date you can manage without relying on borrowing to cover routine expenses.
How to use either card to build credit responsibly
- Pay every bill on time. Set a reminder or arrange a payment method that helps you meet the due date. A record of on-time payments is central to building a positive history.
- Keep your balance modest. Avoid using too much of the available credit. A small limit can make it easier to use a large share of the line, so plan purchases with the limit in mind.
- Pay the statement balance in full when possible. Paying in full can avoid purchase finance charges. Carrying an interest-bearing balance is not required to build credit.
- Apply selectively. When you apply, an issuer may review your credit report, and the resulting hard inquiry may affect your score. Apply for credit you need and avoid many applications close together. CFPB guidance on credit card applications and scores.
- Check your credit reports. Review them for errors and dispute inaccurate information with the relevant reporting company. Accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply by paying a credit-repair service.
What rebuilding can—and cannot—do
Rebuilding takes time; no card guarantees a fast or specific score change. The CFPB says, “There are no shortcuts or secrets.” Its guidance emphasizes paying bills on time, keeping balances well below limits, applying selectively, and paying card balances in full to avoid purchase finance charges. CFPB: How to rebuild your credit.
As of the CFPB page last reviewed September 2, 2026, most negative account-payment information can generally be reported for up to seven years. That is a reporting-duration rule, not a prediction of how quickly a score will change. Dispute errors rather than paying someone to remove accurate history.
