Seattle Times Union members picketed outside the newspaper’s offices on Sept. 30, 2026, urging contract protections against AI replacing newsroom jobs. The dispute is about which work those protections would cover: the union says management accepted human-only interviewing and story writing, but not equivalent limits for copy editing, photography, design, graphics and digital production.
What the union is asking for
The union says it proposed a guarantee against AI replacing union newsroom jobs for the life of the next contract, which it described as likely three years. That is the union’s account of its proposal, not verified contract language. In a Sept. 4 statement, the union said it represented more than 160 newspaper employees and framed the protection as applying across newsroom jobs, rather than only to reporting and writing.
The distinction matters because a newsroom’s work extends beyond interviews and articles. Copy editing, photography, design, graphics and digital production can all contribute to a published story. Union members say protections limited to interviewing and writing would leave those other roles exposed to replacement or restructuring enabled by AI.

The union also said at that point management had not made a wage counterproposal. Seattle Times Union’s May bargaining update

- Sept. 4: The union issued a statement on the company’s AI lawsuit and described its proposed no-replacement guarantee as lasting for the next contract, likely three years. Seattle Times Union’s Sept. 4 statement
- Sept. 30: Union members held a lunchtime picket outside the newspaper’s offices. GeekWire reported that after a bargaining session the previous day, the union was awaiting the company’s response; the next session was scheduled for Oct. 13, 2026. GeekWire’s Sept. 30 report
Why newsroom workers say the scope matters
At the picket, Seattle Times journalist Alexandra Yoon-Hendricks said, “Management has admitted at the bargaining table that it could use AI to replace jobs,” as quoted by GeekWire. Her wording describes the union’s account of bargaining and the possibility of replacement; it does not establish that AI has already displaced Seattle Times employees.
Data journalist Manuel Villa focused on copy editors, telling GeekWire, “There is nothing to say that they wouldn’t be completely replaced,” and adding, “I trust in them to make my pieces better. I am not sure I trust an AI agent to do that.” The concern illustrates why workers may seek job protections that cover the production chain, not just the initial reporting and drafting of a story.

What the company has said—and what remains unknown
Seattle Times Co. President and CEO Alan Fisco told GeekWire: “We understand the Guild’s concerns regarding the development of AI in the workplace, and especially its potential impact on journalism. To that end, we remain committed to negotiating with the Guild toward mutually acceptable contract language regarding AI use at The Seattle Times.”
