Seasonal promotions are usually a better fit when demand, inventory, or capacity follows a recurring cycle; evergreen discounts suit businesses that have a clear reason to keep an offer continuously available. Neither is inherently more profitable. Choose by measuring incremental contribution against a credible no-promotion baseline, including what happens after a discount ends.
What separates seasonal promotions from evergreen discounts?
A seasonal promotion is a price reduction or offer tied to a defined period, such as a demand peak, a slow season, or an inventory-clearance window. An evergreen discount remains available on an ongoing basis, rather than depending on a particular season or event.
The distinction is not simply temporary versus permanent pricing. Seasonal demand varies by category, and a year-round offer can influence when customers buy, how much they spend, and whether they return. A discount’s performance should therefore be evaluated over time, not just by sales during the offer.

When is a seasonal promotion the better fit?
Demand or operations have a recurring cycle
Consider a seasonal offer when your own sales, inventory, or capacity records show a recurring pattern you can act on. Do not assume the relevant dates match common retail events. A 2025 study of 1,427 widely available products across 41 U.S. retail categories found that median category demand at fixed prices varied by 20 log points from seasonal trough to peak, while the timing and pattern differed by category. You have a time-bound objective
A defined campaign can focus attention on a period when you need to move seasonal stock, use available capacity, or pursue another measurable goal. The discount still has a cost: compare the resulting contribution with what you would have earned without the offer, rather than treating all campaign-period sales as incremental.
Your calendar is based on evidence, not convention
The same study found that roughly two-thirds of seasonal categories had countercyclical pricing, and the average category’s seasonal price change was about 1.5 log points. Those findings describe the study’s U.S. retail-goods sample; they are not a recommended discount depth or a forecast for another category or business.

When is an evergreen discount the better fit?
The continuous offer serves a specific customer or business need
An always-available discount may make sense when its purpose is explicit—for example, a defined acquisition offer or a persistent price arrangement for a particular customer group. Make the objective measurable and check whether the offer generates sales that would not otherwise occur.
You can evaluate effects beyond the discounted sale
Repeated exposure to lower prices can alter customer behavior and future sales. A study in Marketing Science warns that models that ignore prior promotional activity can lead managers to overpromote. “The Dynamic Effect of Discounting on Sales: Empirical Analysis and Normative Pricing Implications” For an evergreen offer, review both discounted transactions and off-promotion sales over time; a promotion-period snapshot alone may miss shifted purchases or longer-run effects.

You are willing to test whether customers become deal-sensitive
A persistent offer could encourage customers to wait for a discount, but that should be treated as a question to test—not an inevitable result. Monitor purchase timing, repeat behavior, and sales when the offer is absent or restricted, where those comparisons are feasible.
Compare the strategies against your business needs
| Decision factor | Seasonal promotions | Evergreen discounts |
|---|---|---|
| Demand pattern | Worth considering when your own data show a recurring, identifiable cycle. The 2025 U.S. retail study found substantial category-level variation in seasonal demand. | Can keep an offer continuously available; assess whether it creates incremental purchases or shifts sales from full-price periods. |
| Margin and inventory | Can address a time-bound stock or capacity objective; measure discount depth, frequency, and contribution. | Repeated discount exposure may affect later behavior; assess contribution across time, not only on discounted transactions. |
| Customer objective | Concentrates an offer around a period or event relevant to your business. | Provides an ongoing incentive; use customer data to test whether it changes purchase timing or deal sensitivity. |
| Measurement window | Compare against a suitable baseline and relevant seasonal periods, accounting for demand that would have occurred anyway. | Include off-promotion periods and longer-run outcomes to detect shifted purchases and dynamic effects. |
This is a practical comparison, not a universally tested scorecard. The evidence cited here does not establish that either approach wins across industries, geographies, or offer designs.

How to choose and measure a discount strategy
- Map the cycle. Review sales, inventory, and capacity by month or season before choosing campaign dates. Use your own business data because seasonal timing varies across product categories.
- Define the intended outcome. Specify whether the offer is meant to increase incremental contribution, move inventory, acquire new customers, or achieve another concrete result.
- Set a no-promotion baseline. Estimate what sales and contribution would have been without the discount. Measure the incremental result net of the discount cost, rather than attributing every offer-period sale to the promotion.
- Include the period after the offer. A 2016 study of 70 randomized email-offer experiments on an online ticket resale platform reported that spending increased by $1.55 in the week after an offer expired. This result is specific to that platform and study setting; it is not a general profitability forecast. Zou and Chintagunta, “Do Targeted Discount Offers Serve as Advertising? Evidence from 70 Field Experiments”
- Separate customer groups where possible. Track new and established customers independently. Three field studies found that the longer-run effects of promotion depth differed between these groups. “Long-Run Effects of Promotion Depth on New Versus Established Customers: Three Field Studies”
- Review promotion history and off-offer sales. Look at discount frequency and sales outside promotional periods. Models that omit previous promotional activity can mislead managers about the effects of another discount.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The seasonal-demand evidence concerns widely sold retail goods in the contiguous United States. The post-expiry spending result concerns targeted email offers on one online ticket resale platform. The dynamic-discount and promotion-depth studies support attention to longer-run effects and customer differences, but the findings do not settle the best strategy for every business.
