Seagate has reportedly topped Toshiba’s offer for TDK’s hard-drive magnetic-head business, according to The Inference, accessed October 9, 2026. The reported contest is for a component supplier—not for Toshiba’s hard-drive operation—and there is no confirmation here of a signed deal, final price, or Toshiba exit. If Seagate acquired the unit, it could raise questions about whether Toshiba and Western Digital would retain access to an independent source of heads.
What is being bid on?
The reported target is TDK’s magnetic-head business. Magnetic heads read and write information on a hard drive’s recording media, making them a critical component in the drive. The report describes TDK’s unit as the only independent head maker serving all three hard-drive manufacturers.
The distinction matters: the reported bid concerns TDK’s component business, not a sale of Toshiba’s HDD operation. The report does not establish that Toshiba plans to leave the hard-drive market.

The three HDD manufacturers identified in the coverage are Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital. ETF.net says TDK describes itself as the only independent maker of heads and reports that TDK estimated its share of the HDD-head market at 15% to 20% in August; the year is not specified, and the figure is not an independently verified share of hard-drive sales. - The available storage capacity may vary.
If Seagate gained control of a supplier described as serving all three manufacturers, Toshiba could face uncertainty about future access to that source. But the available reporting does not establish how dependent each drive maker is on TDK, whether alternative head suppliers could meet their needs, or what supply arrangements might follow a change in ownership. It therefore does not show that Toshiba would be forced out.
Why does having multiple suppliers matter?
Historical competition analysis offers context for why buyers may value supplier choice. In a hard-drive merger decision, the European Commission recorded customers citing security of supply and the ability to use competing suppliers against one another to obtain competitive prices as reasons for multisourcing. That record explains a possible strategic concern; it is not a current survey of HDD buyers and does not establish what the reported TDK transaction would do to prices, supply, or competition.
What is confirmed—and what remains open?
The Inference reported that Seagate had topped Toshiba’s offer for the TDK unit. The material available does not confirm a completed transaction, a signed agreement, the bid value, a regulatory decision, or the eventual ownership of the business. Nor does it establish a Toshiba withdrawal from HDD manufacturing.

- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.3
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services
Until company statements or regulatory records confirm the status and terms, the effect on Toshiba is a possibility rather than an outcome. A change in supplier ownership alone is not proof that rival drive makers would lose access to components.
