Neither Seagate One Touch Portable nor WD My Passport is automatically better for every buyer. Choose by exact model and capacity, then weigh security, backup software, Mac compatibility, warranty, and current same-capacity price. WD documents hardware encryption for the cited My Passport family; the standard One Touch HDD configuration emphasizes Toolkit backup features and does not list password encryption.
Which portable hard drive should you buy?
- Choose WD My Passport if password protection and hardware encryption are priorities, after verifying that the exact model and its current software support meet your needs.
- Choose Seagate One Touch Portable HDD if its capacity, price, and Toolkit backup workflow suit you and you do not require password encryption on the standard configuration.
- For either drive, compare exact model codes and same-capacity listings. The names cover different generations and configurations, so a family-wide winner would be misleading.
The comparison here is between portable mechanical hard drives—not Seagate’s One Touch Hub desktop drive or Ultra Touch SSD. Seagate’s product overview distinguishes those products and describes the One Touch HDD family, while WD’s support catalog lists several My Passport model configurations. Is WD My Passport faster than Seagate One Touch?
The available specifications do not establish that one drive is faster in real use. USB standards describe the connection’s capabilities, not the sustained read and write speeds of a mechanical hard drive. WD’s stated up-to-5-Gb/s figure is an interface ceiling for the referenced models; Seagate identifies USB 3.0 for its cited HDD family. Neither number is a controlled head-to-head drive test.

What should Mac users check?
Both brands’ cited documentation indicates that reformatting may be needed for Mac workflows. WD’s referenced FAQ specifies NTFS out of the box and reformatting for macOS; Seagate’s datasheet also notes that Mac reformatting may be required. Before changing a drive’s format, confirm that it works with the computers and devices you plan to use, and move any files on it somewhere safe: reformatting erases existing data.
Also check the exact drive’s supplied cable and your computer’s ports. The cited Seagate manual describes a Micro-B-to-USB-A cable and says a USB-C host requires a port supporting USB 3.0 or higher; the My Passport FAQ identifies a Micro-B connector. Package contents can differ by model and market.

How to compare value before buying
- Identify the full model code and capacity, not just the product family name.
- Compare listings for the same capacity and a reasonably matched generation and warranty region.
- Check the current local price, included cable, return terms, and warranty applicable to that model code.
- Divide the current price by capacity for a price-per-terabyte comparison, but use it only alongside those model and warranty checks.
- Confirm the chosen drive’s file-system, operating-system, backup-software, and security compatibility before transferring important data.
Because the cited manufacturer documentation does not establish live prices or stock, value depends on the listings available to you at purchase time.
Final buying guidance
If encryption and password protection matter most, WD My Passport has the stronger documented case among the referenced configurations, subject to checking the exact model and software support. If they do not, compare same-capacity One Touch and My Passport models on current price, warranty, cable, and the backup tools you will actually use. The evidence does not support a universal winner or a speed winner.
