Bloomberg Law reported on October 6, 2026, that Seagate made a higher offer than Toshiba for TDK’s hard-drive magnetic-head business. The account relies on people familiar with private discussions, and Toshiba disputed it: a spokesperson called the report “inconsistent” with the company’s understanding and denied that three-party HDD-head supply discussions took place. No sale agreement or accepted bid is established.
What Bloomberg Law reported
Bloomberg Law’s October 6 report, by Kentaro Tsutsumi and Takashi Mochizuki, said Toshiba began talks with TDK in spring 2026 and Seagate submitted a higher offer in summer. People familiar with the discussions put the potential value at as much as several billion dollars. The report framed the companies’ interest against demand for AI data-center storage devices.
Those details describe an alleged bidding sequence, not confirmed deal terms. The report’s sources were unnamed, and the material available does not establish that TDK agreed to sell, that either bid was accepted, or that a transaction was completed.
What Toshiba said in response
Investing.com reported on October 6 that Toshiba’s spokesperson told Bloomberg the account was “inconsistent” with Toshiba’s understanding. Japan Industrial Partners, described as Toshiba’s principal backer, expressed the same view. Toshiba also denied that three-party discussions involving Toshiba, TDK, and Seagate had taken place regarding HDD-head supplies.

Why a hard-drive head matters
A magnetic recording head reads and writes data on a hard drive’s magnetic platters. Its performance and availability matter to manufacturers because a drive cannot record or retrieve data without this component.

A 2011 European Commission decision in the Seagate/Samsung HDD business merger case described TDK’s SAE Magnetics as the only merchant-market supplier of HDD read/write heads at that time. The decision said Toshiba and Samsung relied exclusively on TDK, while other drive suppliers mostly manufactured heads internally. It also said Seagate and Western Digital bought TDK heads to cover demand peaks and keep up with technology. This is historical evidence, not a description of the precise supply relationships in 2026.

If a drive manufacturer owned an independent supplier of a component it also sells to other manufacturers, the relevant questions would include access, bargaining power, and supply continuity. The reported bidding story raises those questions, but the available accounts do not establish that any such effect would occur.
