TechRadar Pro reported on October 6, 2026, that Amazon was selling Seagate’s 24TB Expansion Desktop for $679.99, $150 below its stated prior price; the report said Best Buy had the same price. Those are dated observations, not confirmed live offers. The drive is a powered desktop unit, and although the deal report calls it shuckable, opening it carries a warranty risk.

What was the October Prime Day offer?

TechRadar Pro reported the Amazon price at $679.99 on October 6, 2026, describing it as $150 off and about $0.03 per decimal gigabyte. It also reported the same price at Best Buy. Check the retailer listing and checkout total before buying: the reported price, discount, and stock are not live guarantees. TechRadar Pro’s October 6 deal report

In that report’s market comparison, the $679.99 offer was described as the lowest current price for a new 24TB HDD, while a Seagate SkyHawk AI 24TB was listed at $1,029. These were comparisons made at publication, not verified current prices. Seagate’s own product page showed the 24TB configuration as unavailable when checked for the report. What kind of drive is the Expansion Desktop?

It is an external desktop hard drive intended for stationary storage, not a pocketable portable drive. Seagate describes a simple setup: connect the included power adapter and USB cable, then save files using drag and drop. The product page specifies USB 3.0 and compatibility with most Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS systems. Seagate notes that using Time Machine on a Mac may require reformatting the drive. Seagate Expansion 24TB External Hard Drive HDD - USB 3.0, with Rescue Data Recovery Services (STKP24000400)
  • Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
  • Fast file transfers with USB 3.3
  • Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
  • Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
  • Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services

Seagate puts the distinction this way in its Expansion Desktop FAQ: “The difference between an external hard drive and an expansion hard drive is in their design and user experience.” For this model, the practical point is that it is designed to add desk-based storage with a straightforward external connection, rather than to replace an internal drive or serve as a compact travel drive. Why a computer may show less than 24TB

The 24TB label uses decimal units: Seagate defines a marketed terabyte as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Some operating systems display capacity using binary units based on powers of 1,024, so the number shown can be lower even before accounting for formatting and the operating environment. What “shuckable” means—and the warranty risk

“Shucking” means removing an external drive from its enclosure to use the internal disk elsewhere. TechRadar’s deal report says this drive can be removed from its enclosure and warns that doing so voids the warranty entirely. Seagate’s cited product and support pages present the unit as an external desktop drive and do not endorse shucking. Check warranty terms for the exact product identifier and region before opening the enclosure. TechRadar Pro deal report

Do not assume the disk inside is a particular Seagate drive. The deal report speculates that it may be a Barracuda or IronWolf Pro, but that is not a manufacturer guarantee for the Expansion Desktop SKU. There is also an identifier mismatch in the cited warranty information: Seagate’s product page identifies the 24TB unit as STKP24000400, while the support listing cited for a one-year limited warranty is for STNP24000400. Those are different identifiers, so the support listing should not be treated as confirmation of the exact STKP unit’s warranty. How the included data recovery service works

Seagate’s product page says the Expansion Desktop includes Rescue Data Recovery Services, and TechRadar’s deal report describes the service as bundled for the first year. Seagate says Rescue may help after unexpected events such as water damage or a natural disaster, but the service is not available in all countries. The cited information does not establish claim limits, success rates, or eligibility for every buyer; check the terms that apply in your country and to the exact SKU. Is a 24TB desktop HDD a good fit?

This capacity can suit large archives, media libraries, or a backup destination that stays on a desk. It is a less natural choice if you need storage to carry around, want an internal installation, or need a single device that protects data against every failure. The power adapter requirement makes it dependent on a nearby outlet.

  • Up to 48TB (1) of max capacity on two 7200RPM Ultrastar Enterprise-class hard drives inside
  • Ships in RAID 0 for improved performance with transfer speeds up to 540MB/s read and 490MB/s write (2) (48TB only)
  • PRO-BLADE SSD Mag slot to easily add SSD capacity and performance for fast transfers, editing, and backup without adding to your workspace.
  • Color-coded cable indicators to connect the right cables and get the most out of your device performance.
  • High-performance Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) interface and USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 (10Gbps)

Use it as one copy in a broader backup plan, not as the only home for important files. TechRadar’s report summarizes the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies of data, on at least two media types, with one copy offsite. A separate cloud or other offsite copy can provide that geographic separation when it suits your needs and budget. TechRadar Pro deal report

What to check before buying

  • Current price and stock: Verify the retailer’s live listing and final checkout price; the $679.99 price and $150 reduction were reported on October 6, 2026.
  • Exact model identifier: Confirm the product is STKP24000400 and review the warranty and service terms that apply to that SKU in your country.
  • Setup needs: Make sure a desk location and power outlet are available, and check whether your Mac workflow requires reformatting for Time Machine.
  • Backup role: Decide what other copies and offsite protection you will use for important files.
  • Opening the enclosure: If you plan to shuck it, read the exact warranty terms first; the deal report warns that doing so voids coverage.
