Tom’s Hardware reported on October 6, 2026, that Newegg was selling the Seagate Expansion Desktop 16TB external drive for $449.99, $100 below the stated $549.99 price. That works out to about $0.02 per GB. The offer is time-sensitive: check Newegg’s current listing for price and stock before buying.
What the reported deal includes
The offer covered a 16TB desktop external hard drive, not a bare internal drive. Seagate’s product materials list 16TB Expansion Desktop variants, including model STKP16000400. The exact model or SKU matters because Seagate lists multiple 16TB versions and regional specifications can differ.
Tom’s Hardware described the offer as a rare price and compared it favorably with other new 16TB drives it found at the time. That comparison reflects the market when the report was updated on October 6, 2026; it is not a lasting market-wide price benchmark. The report is not a retailer confirmation, so verify the price, availability, seller, and return terms on the live Newegg listing.

At the reported $449.99 price, the drive may suit someone who needs a large external volume for backups or archived files and is comfortable with a desktop drive that needs its own power adapter. The reported per-gigabyte figure is a useful quick comparison, but compare the live price against other drives by decimal terabyte, warranty, exact capacity and SKU, connectivity, and seller terms.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.0
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Seagate describes the device as a desktop external drive. The cited data sheet lists an included USB cable and an 18W power adapter, so the basic setup does not require a separate accessory purchase based on those materials. No verified performance benchmark for the specific deal unit is established here, so do not assume its speed makes it a better fit for frequent access or game storage than another drive.
What “shuckable” means—and the warranty tradeoff
“Shucking” means opening the external enclosure and removing the internal drive for use elsewhere. The deal report says that removing the enclosure voids the warranty. It also notes that the internal drive can vary: user reports mention Barracuda and IronWolf Pro drives, but the report does not establish which model is inside a particular unit.

- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.3
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services
That makes shucking a gamble rather than a guaranteed way to buy a specific internal drive at a discount. If you want the manufacturer’s stated warranty and a ready-to-use external drive, keep the enclosure intact. If you plan to shuck it, weigh the possibility of losing warranty coverage and receiving an internal model that may not match your expectations.
Connection, setup, and capacity
Seagate’s data sheet lists USB 3.0 connectivity and says an available USB 3.0 port is required to get USB 3.0 transfer speeds. It lists Windows 10 or later and Mac OS X 10.12 or later, subject to hardware and operating-system compatibility. Seagate describes setup this way: “Setup is straightforward; simply plug in the included power supply and USB cable, and you are ready to go.”

- For standard desktop use: connect the included power adapter and USB cable, then follow the computer’s setup prompts.
- For Time Machine: Seagate notes that reformatting may be needed. Check the drive’s format and your Mac’s requirements before storing data on it.
- For usable capacity: Seagate defines terabytes using decimal units. Your operating system may show less available space because it may use a different measurement standard and because formatting and other functions consume some capacity.
What is—and is not—confirmed about this offer
The $449.99 price, $100 discount, and roughly $0.02-per-GB calculation were reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 6, 2026. They are not guaranteed to remain available, and Seagate’s product documentation does not validate Newegg’s deal. Seagate’s materials support the product, connection, and compatibility details, but neither source establishes a verified internal drive model or measured performance for an individual unit.
